Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filter Expression Problems

    I have researched the Alpha message board and the learn alpha.com site for examples that would solve my problem.

    I have simple set, parent="customer.dbf", child="invoice_no", records are linked one to many using the customer_id field which is the same format in both tables.

    I am trying to use the "tablesum" function to total the value of all invoices for the "customer->customer_id" value that is displayed on screen.tablesum("invoice_no","invoice_no->customer_id=customer->customer_id","invoice_total").

    I have tried, I believe every possible combinations of "'s, +'s and 's in the filter expression to get this to work.

    The results are always the same error messages, "expected value", "filter not logical expression", or "'customer->customer_id' not found"

    If I substitute a value (ie:217) in the filter in place of
    "customer->customer_id", the function works fine.

    Can anyone provide in site into the correct syntax?

    RE: Filter Expression Problems

    Just a first quick glance

    tablesum("invoice_no","invoice_no->customer_id=customer->customer_id","invoice_total").

    The documentation shows this as

    tablesum("invoice_no.dbf","invoice_no->customer_id=customer->customer_id","invoice_total").
    There can be only one.

      But you said it worked for specified values, so that can't be it.

        Yes, when a value is substituted for the field "customer->customer_id", the filter works wheither the search table is identified as "invoice_no.dbf" or just "invoice_no".

        thanks for your interest

          RE: Filter Expression Problems

          Mike,

          Invoice_no.dbf (within the scope of tablesum() has no idea about the set or it's structure or the database customer. Thus you can not reference customer->customer_id in the filter expression. You can do this (assuming character type);

          screen.tablesum("invoice_no","invoice_no->customer_id='"+customer->customer_id+"'","invoice_total")

          Let's say the customer_id is "123456". The filter evaluates to an expression that looks like

          "invoice_no->customer_id='123456'"

          If it is a numeric field, then it would look like this

          screen.tablesum("invoice_no","invoice_no->customer_id='"+LTRIM(STR(customer->customer_id))+"'","invoice_total")

          P.S. DBSUM() would be alot faster.

            Ira

            Thanks for your response. I pasted your expression into my calculated field. This time when I pressed "evaluate" I did not get the error messages as before, but did get "screen not found".

            I went ahead and checked it in the form view, but the only information it showed in the field was the name of the calculated field. Have I missed something, should the form name be inserted, etc?

            I did build an expression using dbsum and it worked fine. The reason I would like to be able to use "tablesum" is that I ultimately want to check for a date range as well.

            Thanks

              Mike -
              For what it is worth I will sometimes split the tablesum over two fields. One for the filter, one for the tablesum. This way I can tinker with the " ' "s in a filter, evaluting the expression so I get the right result. Especially this is handy when you throw in date ranges or more complex filters. Of course, as Ira notes, they are not fast... But they do let me simply get the job done and not have to sweat out the better database design the way I SHOULD.

                Mike,

                Tablesum() is a function that is not a form or table method.

                You can say things like

                variablename=tablesum(...)

                  I don't understand what you mean "split the tablesum over two fields.

                  Thanks

                    Mike:

                    Why don't you simply drag a New Calculated Field from the toolbar on to the form, give it a name, tell it to total the records in the embedded browse and use the "Advanced" button to make sure that the grouping definition is exactly as you want it. A5 will do the formula for you. Much simpler than any other method.
