Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error Messages?

    Hi Board:

Have a question for you experts out there in Alpha Five land! I think that my question may have something to do with "WINDOWS ME"! I never had these messages with Win 95 or Win 98! I have been getting the following ERROR MESSAGES when in design mode of different applications "A5 caused an error in A2ENGINE.DLL, A5 will close" and also "MFC40.DLL" A5 will close error message!

    BoB:
Sometimes you will get these error messages if you don't open or close a form correctly.
I wasm getting this the other day. I was opening a form without checking to see if it was already open.

      Bob,

I am also getting the same messages more often. Occurs more since I added the Run_Time version.

I haven't associated it with anything else yet.

        RE: Error Messages?

        Hi, Bob:

I get these messages once in a while, too. Mine have almost always been caused by something I had done that A5 found hard to swallow.

I can't think of an exact example, but last week, I was creating a form and had a few lockups. The form had several calculated fields, several conditional objects, and a few hotspots. The more complex the form became, the more critical it was that everything was exact.

Programming is, and always will be, an exact science.

Well, anyway, IF (and I say IF), this is your problem, I'm always able to back track what I was doing and isolate the "error". Once I correct my "mistake", the lockups disappear.

Try to keep a mental note of what you were doing when it locked up. Try repeating those steps to see if it does it again. If so, it's probably something you can fix. If in a form, persay, SAVE THE ORIGINAL, then try deleting various objects, calculated fields, etc. and see if the problem can be isolated. ALWAYS work on a test form, not the original!

It might be my imagination, but it seems like sometimes just doing a datbase compact will help, also.

I've also managed to lock up myself when creating/testing scripts! Once again - when I correct my ways, the problem goes away.

As you already know, I'm not running Me, so I can't comment there.

Hope this helps, I know how frustrating it can be, as I've experienced this problem myself. (Not like the font thing!) Truthfully, though, I can't blame Alpha.

Oh, I just thought of an example! I was scripting a form event, and left a line of code in an embedded browse event that didn't need to be there. The result was that every time I clicked on an embedded browse and later, clicked outside the browse, I'd get knocked out of Alpha. It took a few cycles before I figured it out!

I don't think it's ME that is causing the errors. I use ME (OEM, not upgrade) and haven't encountered them.
