Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New user?

Hi to all those who remember my problems earlier this year.

I still get crashes but it's when I add a lot of data so we re-boot and re-build indexes and that works for a while. I am still using 4.01 Build 147 as upgrades have always given me grief!

However, I currently have a three user version and as we are expanding I need to add another user. What it the best way to do this i.e. just buy another single user or go for a new 5 user pack. I am worried about the problems I will encounter......
    Many thanks

    RE: New user?

    Linda,

Version 4.5 is supposed to be much more stable with regard to indexes than previous versions. I believe alpha calls the indexes "self-correcting", unless that's coming in Version 5.

Hopefully others with more experience & knowledge will post suggestions, but I would upgrade to 4.5 if I were you.

    Mike
    Thank you,

Linda, I personally strongly recommend you upgrade to 4.5; as for the users/new users issue, I suggest calling or emailing Alpha Customer Support, to ask their opinion.

        RE: New user?

        Hi Linda,

I will echo those who've already answered you.
At the very least you should update to version 4.03.
This is a free patch and is a good one. You can download it from Alpha web site and apply it in a matter of minutes.

Version 4.5 is more robust, especially when dealing with indexes but it will cost you a little money to upgrade. IMHO it is well worth it, but that's your decision.

        Good luck,
        Jim

            RE: New user?

I basically agree with the previous comments - at least upgrade to 4.3 and seriously consider 4.5. BUT...

If you upgrade to even 4.03 there may be some minor things that need to be changed. It all depends on what functions you are using in your app. I know there were a few changes during various builds that required me to make some modifications to some XBasic scripts but, unfortunately, I can't recall what they were so I can't give you any specifics.

As for buying another single user or 5-user pack, you should probably consider two questions: (1) "How fast are you growing? (2) Will you upgrade to 4.5?

If you don't expect to need any new seats for another year or two and you don't want to upgrade right now, I would just stick with a single user upgrade.

However, if you expect to grow faster and/or want to upgrade soon, I would then consider going to version 4.5 now and also consider only 1-2 full versions for development and buy an unlimited runtime for the 'regular' users. The unlimited runtime would allow you to add new users whenever you want to and without add'l cost. It would also keep them from making unwanted changes. And, even though I mentioned above that there may be some minor changes required by the upgrade, my guess is that there will be none and, if there are any, they will be easy to work around until resolved.

One last note for info only -- it isn't necessary to check the "...e-mail their reply...' box in every message you add to a thread. It doesn't hurt but you can rest assured that as long as one has been marked you will continue to get an e-mail whenever someone adds a message.
