Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha5.exe

How is the Alpha5.exe icon created when a new database is created? I have some databases with the icon and some/wo. Somehow, I must be creating those with the icon a bit differently than those w/o.

    Thanks,

I have the same problem becuase my video card can't handle resreshing the screen very well.

I assume the icons are on the desktop. Right-click anywhere on the desktop where there is no icon. Select refresh. That usually does it.

If not, try right-clicking the icon, select properties. Selecct "Change Icon", Browse and then select any adb file as the icon.

That's also how you change icons.

    Hope this helps.

      John,

Sorry, that's not what I meant. I should have been clearer. I'm talking about the Alpha5.exe icon located in the folder of a databse.

Ken, it's my understanding that the icon image for a file is identified in the file's properties in Windows. Right click the icon and examine its properties, you'll see that you can change the icon image associated with most. The image itself is usually stored in a file with an .ico extension. You may have to add it to the folder where the file is located in some cases.

Why are some of yours different than others? I don't know for sure, but I'll bet it's related to how the file (not the icon image) was created. Somehow the file can't 'see' the related image file, so Windows displays a generic icon as a substitute.

Ken, We had the same problem on two of our systems. It was there in some cases and not in others. Our soulution was as Tom has suggested, to associate the A5 icon with the file. While examining the properties for the file choose the Change Icon button. By default windows will probably suggest you pick one from the PIFMGR.DLL. If you change the path to your A5 directory in this screen you will have the A5 Icon available to select. Once we did this to one icon, all the remaining were changed with it and we never had the problem again.

              RE: Alpha5.exe

              Hi Tom & Jeff,

The image itself is not the issue as I change them frequently on my desktop. Jeff answered my question. Sometimes the Alpha5.exe icon (the letter a in blue) was in the folder and sometimes not. This had to do with an earlier post about the correct path and once I got those straightened out, the a's appear in the folder. The a's are the icons I drag to the desktop for the database shortcut.

Thanks for the suggestions and solution. Database construction is a good lesson in life. Just when you think you're starting to get ahead, some very elementary issue comes along and knocks you down a peg or two. Keeps one humble which is a good thing.

              Thanks,

Jeff, thanks. I've copied the page source and will be able to use it online, too. Now, if I could only figure out how Stan makes text blue ... ?
