Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    The font problem???

I am soon going to write instructions for installing the runtime for someone else to follow, so I need to know if the latest runtime patch will automatically solve the barups font problem, or do I need to write instructions for deleting the ariel font?

    RE: The font problem???

Check last weeks messages! I had all kind of problems with Windows ME and the "ARIAL FONT"! Selwyn sent and then posted a program that you can download and then run that corrects the problem.

I have a sneaking suspicion there is more than one version of the problem out there. In any case, here is what I think is the case: Presumably you wouldn't be giving your un-updated version of the runtime to clients. So, if you have updated the runtime and corrected the problem on your machine and then put those files into your installation program (assuming you are using an installtion program rather than the original disc-disks from Alpha), I don't think there is any way your user should experience the font problem. If your users need the barusps font, your installation program can install that without causing the problem (as far as I know, that is).

If you don't have an installation program and are considering InstallMaker from Wise Solutions, be aware that they have several different install programs and the low cost ($195) InstallMaker is far from being as full featured as I would like it to be. So check things out carefully if you are in the market for an installation program.

        Raymond,

"So, if you have updated the runtime and corrected the problem on your machine and then put those files into your installation program (assuming you are using an installtion program rather than the original disc-disks from Alpha), I don't think there is any way your user should experience the font problem."

This is exactly what I would have thought but listen to this.

On our Novell network we install software over the network using "Nal objects" where "nal" stands for "Novell application launcher." A Nal object is generated as a difference between before and after snapshots of a machine. Once created, a nal launch puts everything necessary on a local machine including desktop shortcuts, registry settings and all the rest of it. You do not "install" anything. It is one massive file copy.

So I made nals for each A5 application and one for the runtime.

To make the runtime nal, I installed the runtime, patched it up to the latest version, and MANUALLY FIXED THE BARCODE MISMAP ERROR. Only then did I made the "after" snapshot.

I figured I was finished with the font problem. But somehow, launching the runtime nal mismapps the fonts just as if you had run the install.

I can't imagine why this occurs but it obviously results from something deeper than the install process as a completely different kind of "install" also produces the error.

          RE: The font problem???

You know, we need an explanation for what is going on here from Alpha, because it makes no sense. Moreover, it's one thing to have to tell sophisticated users to manually fix the font problem, but it's quite another when an app is directed at really novice users. And the font problem may be multifaceted because on my disks the barusps font doesn't even get installed and yet if I use my original disks (mine came on disks, not a disc) I get the arial font problem, cured by merely deleting it on Win 95 and 98.

I'm going to do some more testing in the next few weeks. Could it be something in the A5 program such that the 1st time you run it (and only the 1st time) it detects some font situation and goes out and screws things up? Because from what you are saying it's hard to see how it has anything to do with the installation routine.

            Ray,

I don't have an install program. I'm not trying to develop a program for sale...I'm trying to set up a small system and donate it to a charity. They are VERY unsophisticated users and since they are in Rhode Island and I am in Oregon, it's a long distance install.

But, I agree that the proper solution is for Alpha Software to supply a downloadable file for the runtime diskettes they distributed when I purchased the product, or a patch to apply to the diskette!
