Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Blank Toolbar

    How do you create one?
Tried and I get a toolbar that says "Drag controls here." and I can't seem to get rid of that text nor the spacer.

    RE: Blank Toolbar

    Peter,

An easy way to do that is to put the form in edit mode, right click on the form
& select properties. Scroll the tabs at the top until you see the "Menus/Toolbars"
tab & set the toolbar to from the drop down box...

That is if by "blank toolbar" you mean that you don't want one to be displayed...

      Hi Doug,

I want a toolbar with nothing on it. Is that possible?

      Thanks, Peter

        RE: Blank Toolbar

Peter, here's what I've settled for:

        1) Open the toolbar in design mode.

        2) Select category: Windows & Help

        3) Drag the Alpha Five icon to the toolbar and drop it there.

        4) Delete the tool tip in the Control box

        5) Disable the control in the Control box

        6) Save the toolbar

It's not blank, but it's acceptable... at least to me.

              RE: Blank Toolbar

Also, worth noting, if you run a "Maximized" application, and you don't have a toolbar on a form, it won't jump around. I only had one form with a toolbar anyway. It is the main form of the application, and was quite irritating that when i opened it or came back to it, it would jump, pause, and then jump again. But with no toolbars, the screen is stable.

I am hoping Version 5 will be written more for a Maximized operation. Based on a reply from Selwyn I read once, I understand that Version 4 was written more for a non-maximized display. Interestingly enough, though, a poll that was put out a while back from I don't remember who returned almost 90% Maximized users.

                Martin,

This is Ken Tjia .. Have you got any idea of eliminating

the minimize/maximize/close icon on the top right side of
Alpha's form. I folow the guideline, but they are still
                showing.

My need is such that I do not allow my users to minimize or
close the FORM with the close "X".

                Your help is greatly appreciated

                    RE: Blank Toolbar

Ken - to run a "Maximized" application, you have to leave the maximize/minimize buttons on ["ALL"] forms, except those you open as dialogs - otherwise the forms won't stay maximized regardless of what code you put where.

However - I don't let the user close the app either - probably for similar reasons as your own - at the CanExit event of every form, put Cancel() - and this will prevent the users from exiting in any way except by pushing a button that lets them exit.

                      Peter,
It really is very simple. Start with the blank toolbar. Add a custom control. Select a custom bitmap for the button and leave it blank. Click disable this control. Just to be safe, select the control type to play xbasic commands. In the xbasic box enter one line - "end". Save toolbar.

I use blank toolbars in the same way you indicate you want to use them, to stop screen "jump" I use toolbars on most forms, but once in a while I want a blank one. I use a similar method to create a blank menu.

                        Doug,

That is exactly why I needed a blank toolbar (for my main menu which doesn't really need one, but it stops the form jump).

                        Peter

PS This demonstrates why every feature of A5 needs to be 100% flexible to give the developer complete control.

                          Martin,

I used to run my app maximized, but I have painfully learned the reality of different screen resolutions. First I converted ny 640X480 forms to 800X600. But, then came along the higher resolutions. Now I design my forms to be maxed at 800X600, but to also run in restore mode at higher resolutions automatically. Even that runs into problems as some users insist upon "large fonts" at the higher res. What we need here is "stretchable" forms.

thanks Martin... It serves the purpose well
and just never thought about doing it that way
and concentrate on other area. Come to think of it,
                            it makes sense.

                              Peter,
about screen resolution. i know what you mean! when I first got Alpha, around January, 1999, I started working with it for my own company, to learn it. Being 58 (and not having the eagle like eye I used to have) I like 800 by 600 with large fonts. Naturally I started writing for that resolution. Well, about that time, my one commercial app, a Hearing Aid Dealer, called me and said they had to convert from DOS to Windows, which we had been avoiding. The app was about 11 years old at that time. Interesting that I had just become familiar enough with Alpha that I decided I would tackle the project. And naturally, I kept developing at that resolution.

Well, a few months later, a few other dealers had seen the new app, and all of a sudden I had so much business with my commercial app I had to sell my home building/remodeling business, and work fulltime with my Hearing Aid app. And naturally I kept developing at 800 by 600 large fonts!

Since then I have one new large and very aggressive dealer who very well may have set me up for the rest of my programming life - which will likely exceed my natural life - I'll probably croak at the Monitor trying to figure something out, if you can relate, and still be thinking about it on my way to the next programming level, shouting back, "Wait a minute - I wasn't through yet!"

Anyway - my dealers, and especially my big one, tell operators that the primary purpose for their computer is for my app. And what ever resolution I like - they will have to like, too. (Not bad, what, what.)

Well - considering that until around the end of 98 I was still on DOS and have had to learn everything I know about Windows and the object oriented/event driven approach since then, I have pretty much been about 2 seconds in front of the 8 ball. Things are settling down now, though, thank goodness.

Anyway - although this was probably a little more information than you wanted - what the heck.
