Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Error message on LAN system

I have a client who is running my application (called Pro Maintainer) written in A5, version 4.0. It is on a File Server and a couple Work Stations. I have this app running with other clients on networks so this is a NEW problem.

Here is their comments & the error that they get:

"...the error message "Failed to save document" only happens when clients on a WORK STATION double-click on the ProMaintainer icon on their desktops. ProMaintainer runs well after it.

There seems to be something in the Alpha5.exe file that tries to save a file somewhere.

On the server, this error doesn't appear perhaps because the ProMaintainer2000 executable file runs from a local drive, and ProMaintainer is not run by Alpha5.

    ********

    Any help is appreciated.

RE: Error message on LAN system

We see this error at times under the conditions you describe. My guess is that the file in question is the .muf file for your application. As each user logs in, the .muf file likely gets updated, even though they are only runtime users.

Don't know of a fix or a workaround, and it is annoying.
    There can be only one.

the error message is probably "failed to open document", not failed to svae document, and occurs when multiple users simultaneously initially open a database (.adb file) on a server. the solution is either:
      1) stagger user opens so that there 2 users do not begin your app at the same time (that is, make sure user A is fully into the app before user B logs in), or
      2) preferably, just optimize the application on each workstation, and then this problem disappears entirely.

I see this error message if I try to open a database that 'isn't there'. If the path to the database is wrong, Alpha will try to open it anyway, and reports that the user must have failed to save it (cause it's not there any more)... at least that's how I've always interpreted the message.

You might check the path and properties of the desktop icon your user's are clicking.

Here's another situation that causes that error:

If you have specified an icon in your command line (-icon=abc.ico) and Alpha can't find it, you'll get this error.

In this case, make sure the icon you are using is in the same directory as your ALPHA5.EXE file.
