Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why not a doubleclick event for form objects?

    I have a date field that I have popup a calendar on arrival (a la Michael Pesach? i am not writing this thing, just assembling the pieces) A little annoying. Sometimes I just want to type. What would be nice is a doubleclick event for the field as they have for browse objects. Then I have the choice of mousing through the form (the other fields have drop down lists) OR keyboarding.

    Please do not hold the presses on version 5 for this, and maybe it could be a user defined object? I have not looked at these too much. They have a mouse event... User defined objects would be a good conference topic.

    "User defined objects would be a good conference topic."

    I certainly second that motion. On the mouse event issue, Dr. Wayne's site has an article on programming a user object which you place on top of the form object.

    That's not too hard to do, but as you will justly point out, *we* have to do it rather than just choose it.

      RE: Why not a doubleclick event for form objects?

      Here's my take on your subject question, "Why not a double click event for form objects?"

      You can't put other objects on a browse table so you couldn't "do anything" with it until Alpha came up with the OnDoubleClick event. However, you can put buttons, conditional objects, etc. on forms. So, why double click when you can single click on a button? For my pop-up calendar, I simply created a small button that I put right next to the date fields. It almost looks like a drop-down button only it's a regular arrow pointing up and it is always visible (which is the way I prefer it).

        Just in case somebody takes my previous post wrong, it should only be taken at face value. I've wondered the same thing myself so the answer above is just my own conclusion to my own question. I never fault anyone for asking for more features - I'd like all the features I can get.

          Cal, not a chance.

          Your button idea is exactly what I do (FYI: Bitmap Library - Tool21). I think it is quite effective. The only thing better would be if A5 had a feature allowing a "button" right in the field where you could attach xbasic - similar to a table lookup field.

              'swot i did, right after posting...
              I put a bitmap of tool 89 on it, and made it as small as I could. Now I see it, I think I prefer it... It is 0.144 inches wide and 0.188 inches tall (same height as the date field) and I have one by each date field. Code on the button is
              dim global seeddate as D
              if PHASE->REC_START = {}
              seeddate = date()
              else
              seeddate = PHASE->REC_START
              end if
              go_on = :form.dialog("cal")
              if go_on = "OK"
              REC_START.VALUE = Var->Showdate
              end if
              END

              The field is REC_START in table PHASE
              I call my calendar form "cal"
              I don't think I modified the calendar tool - it uses seeddate and Showdate as variables.
              I have two exit buttons on "cal", "CANCEL" and "OK".

                Bill, I put it to the right of the field.
