Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    lookup zip code

    Hi,

I need the user to find a zip code from another table( T2) and insert it into the first table (T1). The T2 table can find the zip code by using the prvious input of the city name as the user fills in his form. BUT this lookup operation should only occur IF the country code on the form is left blank ! ( because I don't have a zip code table for every country ion the world...)
    So to resume:
    Fields: country, city, zip
Tables: T1( contains the customer data) and T2 (contains the one country zip codes)
Operations: fill in the country name, fill in the city name, if the country name is blank then lookup the city's zip code from T2 and drop it into the zip field from T1.

    Thanks for the help,

    Harold

    RE: lookup zip code

Perhaps you could roll your own lookup in a script attached to the OnArrive event for the zipcode field. If country is blank, popup a form displaying the zips... You may want to limit the script so that it runs only when the table is in change or enter mode...

      RE: lookup zip code

      Harold,

I wouldn't recommend this method unless every city you deal with is really, really small. I just checked my zip code listing and Chicago, IL has about 80 zip codes; Detroit, MI has about 50; even Abilene, TX has 2. Add to this the fact that there are also cities called Detroit in Alabama, Illinois, Maine, Texas, and Oregon. Can you imagine the chances of getting the correct zip code if you simply look for "Detroit"? I live in Salem township which has about 2200 homes and at least 4 possible zip codes (3 are not Salem). I don't have zip code listings for other countries but I bet it's the same situation.

It's much safer to lookup the city based on the zip code. If there is no chance of that, you should pop up the zipcode list and make the user try to figure out the correct listing. But, what would be the basis of the decision since most listings only have country(maybe), city, state, zip, and county(maybe).

Even if you look up the city based on the zip code, you should be aware that this is only the city where the post office is located. The actual location could be somewhere else - I live 5 miles outside the city & county where my post office is located.

        RE: lookup zip code

        Hi Cal,

Thanks, but no, my country is Belgium ! Very small with no such complications.
So my problem is only the script/event way of having the lookup list appear as a popup when the country field is blank.

          Thanks Tom,

How does the zip code field get to be imported from the lookup table ?
