Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

If you create a folder and keep everything related to your application in that folder, you can copy the folder and move your app from one machine to the other easily, if that's your question.

Hardware requirements are, I believe, 32 Megs of Ram and I believe they claim it will run on a 486 machine, so your Pentium machines will work. I run it comfortably on a Pentium 150 machine with 32 Megs with 4 shared for video. Naturally, it runs faster on faster machines.

I can't help you with your last question.

as long as the program is the same on any machine, you can copy all dbf's and fpt's back and forth. You have to recreate the indexes after you copy the new data to the app. I have a button that does this in my "Utilities" menu. Also, You can transfer the dbf's and fpt's back and forth with PCAnywhere - I maintain about 10 locations this way.

On your last question, perhaps Alpha Five's ability to 'shell out' to windows will help. If you're asking whether it's possible to suspend Alpha Five and run a second program, passing command line arguments to load a graphic image or document, I think the answer is yes... provided the called program permits you to start it up that way. I have no experience with FastLook.

I am not sure what you mean by working at work and at home. I think you mean the development of the application, but you could also mean data entry, too. The answer to both questions is YES, a Jaz drive will work great to transport files back and forth. I, myself, use either a Zip or burn a CD.

The deployment of the files is different though. If you are talking about development, many adjustments to your application can easily be deployed by copying files into the application directory. Changes that are made to the structure of the database, or the indexes will require you to append the data from the old files to the new files before replacing the old files with the updated ones.

Of coarse, always back up before doing this! In the manuals that are included on the installation cd, there is a listing of which files can be replaced easily, such as changes in reports and forms, and which will need an append done. It would be tough to explain without you having the software, but if you buy it and need more info, please post a question and someone will help, or you can search this bulletin board for a competent answer.

If your question was aimed at data entry, this too, is easy. Thinking longterm, though, you should set up your application so it appends data at the push of a button right from the Jaz disk. It most cases, this will work.

Your computers are adequate to run the software. A bit more memory would be nice, though, but is no more so than any other software out there.

There is XBasic code which will start any windows program using a command line. If the application you are starting allows you to set parameters on the command line, you may be able to utilize a variable to start the program and show the picture that corresponds to the record.

Perhaps someone else has done this with the software you mentioned and they will give a more definite answer here...

A trial version of Alpha Five is available for download at ZDNET.COM.

Alpha Five is a great program, and I recommend it to you. If you do try it for the 30 day free trail, and like it, please consider leaving a positive review at ZDNET. I don't work for Alpha Software, I'm just a happy user!

RE: A FEW ISSUES TO DISCUSS

We use A5 in a nearly 2,00,000 record database. Since we're using aa ver beta and it's supposed to go beyond 2M records we're not worrying.

Spent over $80K and 1 1/2 years trying to translate our app to VB and Access -the shop doing that fialed miserably. Their disks are sitting on a shelf somewhere (don't remember which one) and I keep hearing about how it messed up my budget (I run the computer department).

I ZIP the directory with all our stuff and take it home to work on all the time (takes a ZIP 250 now). No problems (unless I get in to the office after they've started in which case I just do a series of copy/paste and have them do a refresh).

Haven't used Fastlook but A5 can be used for a front end to any ODBD compliant DB (like Access). If you run into problems try using the Win 95 CD's Visual Foxpro ODBC drivers - they usually work.

              Jim,
the same thing happened with me and my current biggest customer - except that I came in after them. its interesting that the great VB and Access couldn't do it.

RE: A FEW ISSUES TO DISCUSS

There will definitely be a learning curve because of the transition from dos to windows. However, the transition will be easier with A5 because with Access very heavy lifting is required to go beyond the most simple things.
