Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Region Break in Report

    HI,

I have a report that I want a change a group based on a character field that contains the days of the week.

DaysField=Su Mo Tu We Th - or it might contain
DaysField=Mo We Fr - and other combinations.

So in example one (Su Mo Tu We Th)I want a break on all five of those days based on this one field.
Then example 2 (Mo We Fr) would join example one on the common days.

I've tried *any, *Word, $, Contains but with no luck - yet.

Is anyone experienced in this? Suggestions. Thanks

    Tom

    RE: Region Break in Report

    Tom,

The basic answer is yes, but the question is where is the source of the constant. If you pass the argument yourself, then it is easy. If not you will have to translate you arguments into the codes below. E.g.

brkdays is a 7 wide character field having the numbers 1 through 7 in various positions represending the day-of-week number (in other words Sun=1, Mon=2...Sat=7) that the days will break to. The positions in the

'Thus for DaysField=Su Mo Tu We Th - or it might contain
    brkdays="1234555"
' Thus Th Fri and Sat (represented by positions 5, 6 & 7 in the above)
' would all have the same break character

'For DaysField=Mo We Fr it would be
    brkdays="6224466"
' Thus Mon-Tue (represented by positions 1, 2 in the above)
' would all have the same break character, Similarly Wed-Thu & Fri-Sat-Sun

      RE: Region Break in Report

      Ira,

Thanks for your response, but let me try to explain better.

I have a field called DOW and another DOW_NO. (they represent days of visits for homecare).

DOW = Su Mo Tu ...
      DOW_NO = 1 2 3 (automatically filled depending on DOW)

So if DOW = Mo We Fr
I want a report that will group all the Mo in the Monday Group, and all the Wednesdays in one group...

So how do I get DOW = Mo We Fr to print under those groups, three times.

      Thanks

      Tom

        RE: Region Break in Report

        Thomas,
If I am understanding the situation, you have a single record with a schedule that includes days of the week that ( let's say a client or patient ) is scheduled for weekly.

I have a similar situation where patients are scheduled for attendance on particular days of the week. I have seven fields (sun mon tues etc) that represent potential days that the client is scheduled for. Each patient has particular days that they are scheduled for a visit.

When I wanted a report to look at daily schedules by day for all clients was to create a table with a field called weekday and fields to represent client info etc. I then created a script ( could be done with multiple appends without using xbasic )to read the single weekly schedule record and create a record for each client for each day of the week. Then it was a simple matter to print reports by day of all scheduled activities ( in this case visits). This whole process is invisible to the user; all they do is ask for the report.

In general, you have a single record that represents multiple events, and you want a report that looks at all events. In my opinion, you have to create a work record for each individual event.

          Hmmmmmmmmmm

I don't need to know the date, only the day. And I know the day(s). Seems that ought to be a way to read through multiple days in one field, and separate them into groups in a report. Don't think I'll get much sleep tonight.

            RE: Region Break in Report

Thomas, storing multiple values in a single field creates many, many, difficulties later on, typically at report time, when you need to extract and group items based on 'partial field values'. The recommended technique is to use separate fields to store single values. In your case the report you are describing will be much easier to group if your records included separate fields for each possible day of the week upon which services might need to be scheduled.
Incidentally, the update operation feature of Alpha Five would make conversion after restructuring relatively painless. If you may a series of logical fields:

            Su
            Mo
            Tu
            We
            Th

            etc

You could then run an update operation to scan your existing field for 'Su' and if found, set the new Su field true. Repeat process for the other days and you're done.

Thanks for all your comments. It's not to late for me to redesign my application and make the suggested change. I could use check boxes to make it convenient.
