Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help with label filter

    Good Morning,

    I'm trying to print labels that are unique. When using the script recorder window after checking the option of setting filter/query at print time, I get:

    range.flags = RANGE_INDEX .or. RANGE_UNIQUE
    range.index_handle = index_handle_get(db_current(),"Md_Name")
    range.filter = ""
    range_add(db_current(), " ", " ")
    :Label.print("Physicians")

    But when I put this on a button in a menu form in a different table, it doesn't work.

    The table name is PATIENTS the index name that is unique is MD_NAME this is also the name of the field I wish to have unique.

    You help is much appreciated.

    Tom

      You can't take those recorded scripts and use them without some tweaking to tell Alpha what table to use.

      tbl = table.current()
      idx = tbl.index_primary_put("MD_Name")
      range.flags = RANGE_INDEX .or. RANGE_UNIQUE
      range.index_pointer = idx
      range.filter = ""
      tbl.range_add()
      :Label.print("Physicians")

      I think.
      There can be only one.

        No, doesn't work.

        The index is set to unique, and the range filter is Unique, yet it does print duplicate labels!!

        More suggestions please.

          RE: Help with label filter

          Don't know why my last code worked at all (not generating an error)!

          Try:

          tbl = table.current()
          idx = tbl.index_primary_get("MD_Name")
          tbl.index_primary_put(idx)
          range.flags = RANGE_INDEX .or. RANGE_UNIQUE
          range.index_pointer = idx
          range.filter = ""
          tbl.range_add()
          :Label.print("Physicians")
          There can be only one.

            Still not working.

            It stops at line 5 saying, "invalid argument number"
            I rechecked the index, and you have it right.

            tbl = table.current()
            idx = tbl.index_primary_get("MD_Name")
            tbl.index_primary_put(idx)
            range.flags = RANGE_INDEX .or. RANGE_UNIQUE
            range.index_pointer = idx
            range.filter = ""
            tbl.range_add()
            :Label.print("Physicians")

            END

            I'm starting in Menu.dbf so I tried changing line to:
            tbl = table.open("patients.dbf") but it didn't help.

            Other suggesions?

              RE: Help with label filter

              Tom, I'm not certain the range functions you are using were intended for this purpose. When I try to follow your lead, and then print labels based on the 'currently selected records' the range is ignored in favor of the last 'view' in effect for the table. It's as though the range is not persistent when a button on the form previews the labels.

              Take a look at the attachment. Unzip it to a separate folder. Do not mix it with your development work.

              The label definition is set to choose records based on 'currently selected records' in the Names table.

              The Set Names Unique w/Range follows your example and restricts the display of names in the form to those with unique names. But this is ignored when the labels are previewed.

              The Set Names Unique w/Query shows another way to restrict the display of names in the form to those with unique names. This button runs a query against the table. The query is persistent, and remains in place when the labels are previewed.

              Long story short. I recommend you use a query in this kind of situation.

                YES>.....

                Your example was great. And attaching it to the label only involved clicking on the label property that asks, filter/query.

                Another problem solved...on to the next.
