Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Design? look up filter? Help

I have a database that records New Sales Orders.
Ord head table records the customer information.
Ord Line table records the line items
They are both joined together in a set using Ord Num as the parent link, Ord Head table being the parent.

I have then created a form to enter orders

I have also a product table, which records products and marries them to customers

When I arrive at the Product N0 field in the Ord Line table I would like to only look up products that have the same Cusd Id as the Cusd ID field in Ord Head table.
How can I achieve this as fields rules only allow me to specify filters for that specific table.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    I have three tables
Ord Line Fields Ord N0, Product N0,
Ord Head Fields Ord N0, Custd ID
    Product Fields Product N0

    David,
I understand ver5 will give you this capability. The V5 beta users will correct me if I am wrong. Until then, what you want to do is possible, it just requires some work. I have an app where I needed to do a lookup from a set. Similar problem in that I couldn't do this with field rules. I worked around this by using the object events on a form to popup a separate dialog form based on the set. This form looks like a A5 lookup browse and can be opened with a query to restrict records to want you want to display. Then I used variables to pass values from the main form to the dialog and back again.

Place a script on the Product No field's CanArrive event so the lookup would occur if the field is blank. In your case, create and open a dialog form based on the Product table. Pass the Custd ID value from the Ord Head to a variable and use it to make a query to restrict display to the records you want. Open the form as a dialog to select the values you want and pass these values to variables. When you close the form, the calling script will resume. Close the dialog and pass the variable values to the field. I also placed a small button beside the field object with a little arrow to allow the user to open the dialog if a value is already entered.

The end result is that it looks and works similar to a regular A5 lookup. It's just a lot more work. I prefer to specify the lookup in field ruiles if possible.

To do that, the Product DB would have to contain a field for the Cust ID updated each time it is listed on the order. This would be a 'moving' target as I assume different customers might order the same product. Don't think you can do it, but it might be interesting to see other answers.

Jerry - would you look at the times of both out posts - SECONDS apart. What you've done is quite clever - does it work quickly?

          Ken,
I think the speed of the query would be the only limitation. I don't have a query for the dialog and it pops up instantly.
