Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Violations Using Modified Mailing List

    OK, here's the scenario:

I've modified the sample Mailing List database that comes with ver. 4.03. Specifically:

-I removed Middle Name, Birthday and Notes fields.

-I then added several of my own fields.

-I edited, as best I could, all relevant forms, browses etc. so that, as far as I could tell, there were no references to the removed Fields.

The Problem- when I attempt to 'add people to list,' after having successfully run a query and having returned results, all of my records end up in the violations.dbf.

How can I figure out why this is happening?

    Thanks for any ideas,

    JA

RE: Violations Using Modified Mailing List

    Hi Joe,

I haven't looked at the mailing list sample in a while but I think I know what is happening.

You removed fields from the tables and eliminated these fields from any forms to avoid the nonexistent object error you would receive when opening the forms.

However, I think the append operation to add people to a list must reference one or more of the missing fields. Therefore, the append stalls and your names get added to violated.dbf.

The cure involves editing the append operation. If it is a saved operation you can open it in design mode from operations tab of the control panel. If it is scripted you have to find the script and edit that from the code tab--open the script in design mode.

In either case, you will be changing the field references in the append to eliminate the the missing ones and add any required new ones.

The problem is I can't remember which it is (script or saved operation) and I don't have a copy of the application handy. Perhaps somebody else remembers. Meanwhile I'll try to check.

The problem should not be a big deal to fix

      Joe:

      I went off and checked.

There is a saved append entitled "add people for import" which would appear to be implicated as it contains the fields which you have altered. I didn't find where it runs from but the only other append operation doesn't contain those fields so it probably is not involved. I didn't check all the other saved operations for references to removed fields but you probably should.

If you examine the code attached to a button you will sometimes find something like

      operation.run("operation name here")

When the operation refers to a missing field it breaks.

Sleuthing this out should be a good didactic exercise for you. Write back if you need more help.

        Bill,

Thanks for your advice- I'm glad to have the assistance of a former 'New Yorker.'

I tried your suggestions and did find (and remove) those references in the Add List Records Operation. However, I'm still getting the same problem.

I'm going to have a look at the original, unmodified version to see how it differs from mine. Since there aren't that many, I'll trying making the modifications one by one to see if I can isolate the issue. I'll let you know what happens.

I hope you don't mind the email- I wasn't sure if you would check back with the forum. For the benefit of others, I'll post this message to the forum.

          Joe,

You should know that you can turn on something called the trace window and see what is happening during processing operations. Also, there is the debugger. You should become familiar with both as they greatly aid in unsnarling situations such as yours.

You can also zip up the modified application and post it here where others can look at it with you.
