Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: set variable help @#$%

    Thomas, if you implement Finian's approach, the variable must also be declared as global in the form you use to display records during data entry. Otherwise, even though the variable has the same name, it's 'local' to the data entry form, and not the same 'thing' as the global variable used in the field rule.

    This was probably not mentioned by Finian because it's inherent in globals...

      I have declared it a global variable on the browse also. I just cannot seem to get it to work. I'm sure it something obvious. If you have time, I'd appreciate you looking at the file I uploaded and review the field rules and the browse.

      Thank You

        Tom:

        I looked at your file. You are using Option Strict so I cleaned up your script ....

        Option Strict
        dim global v_drug as c
        dim t as p 'all variables must be declared
        t=table.current()
        v_drug=t.name

        works.

        However, it only works when a record is entered or when a change is written to the field. If you just pass the cursor through the field without making a change, the OnWrote does not fire.

        I don't know what you want to do with v_drug after, but it is definitely written to a global variable accessible outside the event.

          Thomas:
          I took a look at you app.
          I guess I don't understand what you are doing.
          In your field rules meds.dbf the dfr field is doing a lookup on itself.
          I dont understand why you wouldn't have a dbf for the master file with all onf the medications doses and other info and a transactions or client dbf that would do a lookup on the master. Then you could load a variable from the last lookup of the master file.
          Sorry

            Finian,

            YES!! Thank You... it works beautifully. Just what I wanted.

            I'll use this as a model - One to go to school on. And nice job on filling a table with form names.

            Enjoy - you may take the rest of the day off!

              This is an object lesson in why I stopped using Option Strict a long time ago ... without it you'd have solved the problem hours ago ...

                RE: set variable help @#$%

                Your form is exactly the type I have been looking for. I'm going to study it to see how the letters [A-Z] get the browse to display, and how the browse next to the letters show all the people who's last names start with the letter. Good job.
