Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    set variable help @#$%

    Good Morning,

    My first task of the day is turning out to be very difficult - for me.

    I want to set a variable in field rules of the meds.dbf the field is name. What is wrong with the following:

    v_drug=meds->Name.value

    I also tried:

    v_drug=meds:Name.value
    v_drug=:meds:Name.value
    v_drug=meds->Name
    etc.

    and how can I test the expression without going out to a browse view. I type ?v_drug in the interactive window and I only get "".

    HELP

    Tom

            sorry for all the incomplete posts. My machine just jumped screens and posted the unfinished posts.
            Any
            This might help.
            go to form design
            select variables
            Make sure that v_drug is defined as a global and character.
            then go to form actions and type the following.
            dim global v_drug as c
            var->v_drug=med->name
            parentform.resynch()
            go to the field box and drag the variable v_drug to the form.
            Also go to the form actions on fetch
            and type the following.
            var->v_drug=med->name
            parentform.resynch()
            this should re synch the variable to the name of the med so that you do not have to go to browse to see the variable.

              Charlie,

              Thanks for all your replies - made me feel important.

              I cannot use your suggestion. Let me explain further.

              I want to set the variable in field rules because I want to unput into a browse on a form. I want to filter a lookup based on the variable "v_drug" that is filled by meds->name that is a column, hence no OnArrive, or OnWrote events at the form level.

              Why can't I use the same script in the field rules? Because it won't work. oh yeh..

              More suggestions please.

                I us a version of this in my payroll.
                I select an employee name and browse their time
                Unzip this file to a folder.

                  Charlie,

                  Thanks for the file.. very impressive.

                  However, it doesn't answer my question.

                  I want to set a variable (v_drug) in field rules for Med->name to use to filter a lookup for med->dosage in the same dbf.

                  var->v_drug=med->name.value - or text does not work or similar does not work.

                  I feel I am overlooking something very simple. I am prepared to be embarrassed when I find the answer.

                  More suggestions please.

                    I guess I just don't understand.
                    If you select the letter A then you only want to see the drug names that start with the letter A?
                    Could you post a sample of your files so that we could understand it better.

                      Tom:

                      For the v_drug variable to be accessible outside the field rule on wrote script, it needs to be declared as either session/shared or global. So your on wrote script could be

                      dim v_drug as global
                      t=table.current()
                      v_drug=t.name

                        Here is med.dbf, I hope.

                        Again, in field rules, I want to set a variable "v_drugs" to meds->name and use it to filter the meds->dnr lookup.

                        Thanks

                          Finian,

                          Thanks for your suggestion, but it did not work.

                          I cleaned up your script to:

                          dim global v_drug as c
                          t=table.current()
                          v_drug=t.name

                          More suggestions would be appreciated. It cannot be this hard. I must be missing something obvious.

                            dim global v_drug as c
                            t=table.current()
                            v_drug=t.name

                            Did you close the app and restart before testing the global declaration of v_drug? Is it possible that you have used that variable name elsewhere? Is "name" the correct field name as in t.name? Is it possible that you have a validation rule or rule on the On Save that could be affecting the value of the t.name field? These are the only things I can see that would stop the above code from working.

                            Make an entry in the t.name field with that rule in place. Then go immediately to the interactive window and check the value v_drug. If it is correct, then the problem lies in the way you are using the variable elsewhere.

                              still does not work!!

                              I created a browse. Only have name, dfr, and v_drug on it. I added v_drug by defining it in the browse so I could see if it was working. But no go.

                              More suggestions.
