Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Compact Database at Startup

    I need to run the Compact Database at startup either automtically or by a button. I've added a button with a Xbasic command to Pack() and the syntax checker says that it's OK. But when I click the button, I get this error:

    Trapped Error in action command [1]
    Command: InLine XBasic
    Error: Function is not recognized

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    RE: Compact Database at Startup

    The syntax checker does a pretty decent job of catching unbalanced parentheses, and incomplete structures (missing end if or end while statements, for example). But that's about it. It does not verify that names you use for built in functions actually are supported by Alpha Five. That happens when the script is run.

    I suggest you insert a debug(1) statement in your script, and step through it until you can find the offending line. Then dig in and see if you can figure out what's wrong. You might also post the script here...

      I think A5 doesn't know what you mean if you are just using "pack()" Here is a script that works.

      dim tbl as p
      tbl=table.current()
      tbl.pack()
      end

      Try this one.

        I agree with Mick if what you (John) originally meant was that you wanted to pack (compact) the table. If you really meant "database compact", you need something entirely different.

        This table vs database terminology distinction is hard to get set in my head.
        There can be only one.

          RE: Compact Database at Startup

          Maybe I should explain why I want this:

          I have several tables that are emptied in a databse and then other tables are appended to them.

          If I don't go to File-Compact Database, then reports created from that data end up missing some details. They mathmatically add up to what shows but, if I run the report again, different details are missing and others finally appear. The File-Compact Database operation cleans everything up and it works fine.

          I also use it so that auto-incrementing numbers reset.

          I will try the script mentioned by Mick. I assume that the line that reads table=table.curre "curre" is the table name???

          Thanks.

            Hi John
            If the button is on the form that is attached to the database (or table)you want to pack, you can use tbl=table.current() since the database is already open. If you want to access another database that is not already open, you have to use the command a little different by calling out the name.

            tbl=table.open("NewDBF")

              Almost right, Mick. I'm sure you know what you meant (I noticed what was in the parenthesis) and I've done it many times myself but, just to clarify it for John...

              To be technically correct, change all the "database" references in Mick's note to "table". The Pack() command works on Tables but I don't believe it can be used on sets or database (adb) files. HOWEVER, you can run a "Dictionary.update(filename)" on ".adb" files and on the ".set" files and I believe it will also compact the tables. (Mick and many others of us have been working with databases long enough that we remember when "database" was the only word used. Now, the old "databases" have become "tables" and a "database" now refers to a grouping of "tables".)

                RE: Compact Database at Startup

                I'm not quite how to do that. I've only used Update once before to change a numeric value.

                Admittedly, I'm a little lost when it comes to writting scripts, functions, etc. Though I'm starting to get used to Action Scripts.

                I am just getting used to database and tables not being used interchangably. My last version of A5 used them as the same idea.

                I appreciate the help.

                  The formula worked. It didn't compact the whole database (*ADB)but I use it whenever I run a delete operation on a table. Everything looks great now.

                  Thanks.

                    John:
                    if I am going to append data to a table for reporting, I usually zap the report table first and then do the append.
                    I don't have to do a pack.(the zap takes care of that)
                    below is a script to zap the table.
                    Charlie Crimmel

                    'Before zapping the table confirm action with the
                    'user and set the safety flag appropriately.
                    ' --------------------------------------------
                    'Compute the Message Type Code
                    message.text = "ZAP Database"
                    sleep (5/10)
                    tbl = table.open("xxxxxxxx.dbf")
                    safety = .T.
                    tbl.zap(safety)
                    tbl.close()
                    'ui_msg_box("Note", "Operation Complete")

                      Thanks for the info.

                      I've used Zap bafore with A5V1 but I haven't seen it in A5V403 though. I'll keep that in mind.
