Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import/Export

I have data that I wish to export to a comma delimited file. The export goes fine. I can view the data in other programs and it looks good.

The trouble happens when I try to import the exact same file that I just exported. I get a warning indicating that there are too many fields.

I've tried exporting the file with and without field names. And, I've tried both adding the existing data to the table and creating a new table (overwriting the old table with the new data) I don't want to lose my field rules for the table.

I've also tried deleting the old table data before the import.

I have verified that the import rules match the exports rules (delimiter, cahracter fields in double-quotes, etc.)

    Thanks.

By the Way, the "Too many Fields" warning stumps me because I only have 20 fields in the table.

      John,

I just tried this on some table of fine and it worked fine.

I would examine the data in the table you are exporting. Could be something that fools Alpha into thinking there are more field separations than there should be. Alpha should recognize any field values "containing" commas to be exported as "quoted" between commas.

      There can be only one.

        RE: Import/Export

        The format seems fine.

I figured out how to import the data but all my field rules get wiped out in the process. The field names also get changed to FIELD_1, FIELD_2, etc.

I'll try this next. I'll have the imported data make a new table and then do an intersect of the two tables. I think that may allow the data to be placed there without messing up my field rules. I've never needed to do an intersect before and I hope I understand what it does correctly. Thanks for the help.

          RE: Import/Export

          John:
When I import data from my barcode readers I import a text file into an import dbf
Then I use a saved append operation to append the information from the import to the real dbf.
That way my field rules are kept.

The append operation worked, Thank you.

Is there a way to turn off the Warning screen indicating that there were no violations and mentioning where the violations.dbf table is found.

My application is designed for users with little to no computer experience and I woryy that they will "freak out" a bit when they see the warning screen. In a worst case, I will place a message on the form telling them to just click OK and not worry about it.

            I appreciate the help.

Check out the "run_silent" argument the append operation takes.

                  Dear John,

I am developing my project in AlphaFive Version8. In my web application i have an option to import/export tables from/to Microsoft Excel & SQL.

                  How can i Import/Export tables?

I think you have a solution to solve this problem.
                  Thank you!

                  Regards,
                  Thenmozhi.
