Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    form view using popup doesn't allow a f.close()

    Hello,
    Ive opened a form with a Form.view(name, popup) command. A button placed on the form with the code: parentform.close() will not close the form. Apparently there is something about opening a form in popup mode that gets in the way of a *.close() method, or is it suppost to be this way. I'd like to think we could control it via xbasic.

    Anyone have any insight on this? Running v4.03

    Thanks,
    Jim

    Jim,
    I'm too much of a novice to have your answer, but I'd appreciate an explanation of the purpose of a popup form versus a dialog form and how you use them.

      Jim,

      I have not played with this, however I suggest using a close that does not reference parentform (which may be effectively referencing the parentform that started the pop-up). Try using something like

      frm=obj("windownameofpopup")
      frm.close()

      or

      windownameofpopup.close()

        Hi Ira,

        Thanks, for your thoughts.
        I had tried a sys_send_keys() and managed to shut down A5 with this so I referenced the active window and it seems to reference the popup correctly. I'll try your syntax.
        Thanks again.

          Hi Ohlen,

          I don't have any great insight for you. The popup style does just that, pops the form up in a small format if you've so designed it. If you've played much pulling up forms from forms you know that if you have a maximized form on screen and then open another form from the first form it also will open maximized unless you deal with this via xbasic. The popup will come up in the restored (small)size which is what I want many times to allow a user to see some info or make a simple choice. Look in you xbasic manual in the layouts chapter, then look under the Form.view() section for some info on popups.

          You can close a popup with the normal X in the upper right hand corner, but I was trying to close it via xbasic and ran into this issue.

            Jim, since I use maximized forms, I usually open a "little" form as dialog - but, as I'm sure you know, you have to manually close it.

            f=form.view("formname","dialog")
            'some action in the dialog form closes the dialog form
            f.close()

            doesn't the pop up work the same way?

              Hi Ira,

              Tried the different syntax, still can't close the form using xbasic. Small issue, but I would think that this is not by design.

              Thanks,

                Hi Martin,

                I could use dialog style, but basically I believe popup is for the purpose I'm trying to put it to. No it doesn't work quite like a dialog in the the xbasic script that calls the popup form doesn't stop execution at that point, it goes on to completion. I have a button on the popup form that I run some code (this works fine) and when finished I want the code to close the popup form. It doesn't

                Thanks,
                Jim

                  I briefly looked at popups, and went back to dialog forms, but I seem to remember Ctrl F4 from the keyboard did the job. Are you saying sys_send_keys("{^F4}") from the popup shut down A5?

                      I too have given up on popups because of this - it's a shame because I can see many good reasons to use popups instead of dialogs at times.

                      Are we saying that there is NO way to close the popup other than clicking on the X??

                            I have a pop-up form and found that the only way I could close it was by using the sys_send_keys("{Alt-F4}"). However, it only closed the form when it was accessed via my application.

                            If I opened the form from the Control Panel and closed it then Alpha would close completely.

                            It seems to work OK in the application.
