Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime control panel

I have just recently received A5v4 Runtime. When I install it on my network and patch the upgrade to build 230, I can't get to the control panel to network optimize. I have added a hidden button on the opening screen, but would prefer not to have to do this. Is there any way To insure that the control panel is not hidden when I install the runtime?
This is not all that much of a problem, just annoying to me.
    Thanks for any help.

Lloyd, maybe I'm missing something, but if you do not define a form to load on start, when you open the database with the runtime you'll be looking at the control panel.

It's as if the control panel is hidden. When I put a button on the form with the command :controlpanel.show()then I can access the control panel. I wonder if I did something with the update to build 230 to hide the control panel. I can get by with this, but I would rather not have to tell the users about the hidden button. I would likr the user to be able to network optimize without any additional steps. And it bugs me that I can't get it to work the way I want.

        RE: Runtime control panel

        Let's start over.

When the runtime starts the control panel is not hidden unless you have done so in the autoexec script.

If you have set the properties of the database so that a particular form loads on startup, that form will be displayed 'on top of' the control panel, so that it seems hidden to the user. However, it's visible if you minimize the startup form.

There are other permutations. For example, the onInit event script of the startup form might 'hide' the control panel, too.

        Which did you do?

What is that you want to do differently?

Is it possible your first question is not what you're really after? Instead of wanting to know how to avoid hiding the control panel, are you *really* interested in being able to have the user network optimize their workstations whether the control panel is hidden or not?

            Tom
Maybe I am using the wrong wording, I consider the control panel to be the screen where the tables, reports etc is displayed. This is what I cannot access. I have been told that I don't explain things to clearly at times, this is probably one of those times, but I will try again, and thanks for your patience.
I have installed a5 full version on station 2 when I run an application I can network optimize like I thought I would be able to. The application has a run on load screen and when this screen appears I can click on the control panel icon on the tool bar and the control panel appears.
When I install a5 runtime on station 2 and run the same application I cannot access the control panel without having a button on the opening form with the command :controlpanel.show(), then I can network optimize as needed. I guess it's no big deal I just thought the runtime should work like the full version.

                RE: Runtime control panel

I haven't experienced what you describe, probably because I deliberately hide the control panel so my runtime users can't get to it easily. You might password protect the 'show control panel' button, and feel better. Alternatively, you could customize the toolbar displayed with your startup form, to assure that the control panel can be accessed there, instead of using a button.

Others would put a 'hotspot' object on their startup form, which remains hidden, but which will run a script to show the control panel if the user pushes it.

I have only one version of the application on the network so I pertty sure that it is the same one. I guess I will go with the hidden button until I figure out what is going on. Thanks for the help.
