Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple Variables

    Can anyone suggest or lead me to the documentation that would show me how to display a message box to ASK for 7 different numeric variables to be used in a report? I can do it with 7 different boxes but would prefer just ONE.

    Thanks

    Philip,

    Have you looked at ui_get_check(). It allows you to collect up to 8 "check marks". You have to code to interpret the result string. I don't know if you want to allow the user to enter 7 different numeric variables or choose some of the seven to be used.

    Or you could display a form with your seven variables displayed and allow user entry.

    There can be only one.

      RE: Multiple Variables

      I want the operator to be able to enter in the credit card purchase amounts by day. That is why I needed the seven variables. The check box would not work. I thought about the form but I always seem to have problems controlling the size as I run every screen in Maximum. If you can suggest a way to allow me to designate a size for the variable form and it stays that size when opened (without closing my main screen) I could try that.

      Thanks

        Phillip

        You might try a conditional object on this main screen (form)that allows the user to enter the seven global variables and print the report from there. A button causes the object to appear,allows variable entry and finally allows printing. When done printing you change the condition ( another variable ) to put the conditional object back to its default state.

          I use conditional objects all the time. I forgot about this. I will try it. However, am I to assume that there is no way for A5 to allow a UI_BOX to have multiple numeric entries with the exception of the check box?

          Once again thanks

            RE: Multiple Variables

            Philip, I have done this using a dialog. Here's what I did:

            First, create a form (called CC_NO, let's say) with the fields you want. In properties, define the size you want for the window (you'll probably end up playing around with this). Then, attach this script to the button to display the form:

            form.view("cc_no","dialog")
            cc_no.close()

            Now, this seems to be odd code...haven't I just opened the form, only to close it? Well, that's one of the oddities of dialog forms.

            On the form cc_no, put a CLOSE button to close the form (yeah, I know, really weird). I usually use

            parentform.close()

            because it's so portable. Then, when you press the button to open the form, you can enter data in all the field, and then click on the CLOSE button to close it.

            If you have any problems, feel free to contact me directly.

              Bill,

              EXCELLENT CHOICE of options. Your idea is going to work fine. I never did pay that much attention to the dialog box feature. You have opened many other opportunities for me.

              Thanks a bunch
