Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Posting Sample

    Hi Everyone,

Can someone have a look at my simple attachment and tell me what is going on. It has been driving me nuts. I am trying to create a simple post operation to get values from the child into the parent table of a set. I have used this method many times with out trouble but for some reason I am now getting erratic results.

    Appreciate any tips here.

    Michael

    Sorry Michael,

I see a reindex script and an export operation, but no sign of a post operation.

      RE: Posting Sample

      Hi Stan,

Have you opened the correct zip because I have just downloaded my own zip and it contained my sample database.

Though I may have already answered my own question as I spotted this line on the manual.

'NOTE When creating a filter expression for a set, you can only filter records using fields from the primary table and child tables that are linked to the parent with a one-to-one link. Fields in tables that are linked with a one-to-many link cannot be used to filter records.

       1996-1997 Alpha Software Corporation'

Would be very grateful if you could have a look and maybe explain why it should be a problem.

        Michael.
I took a quick look. It appears to me, in at least the posting opeation "Extra Bill Advance" you have conflicting filter expressions. In one place you're saying:
        Add_Arr="advance" for a transaction filter

In another place you are saying:
        @EXTRAS_LESS->ADD_ARR"Advance" for a posting condition

This was a very quick look at it.

          RE: Posting Sample

          Michael,

I changed your original posting "condition" by clicking on the "smart button" to bring up the expression builder, then selecting (HILIGHTING) the first part "@EXTRAS_LESS->ADD_ARR" and double clicking on the field name in the expression builder. This changed the expression to
@Extras_Less->Add_Arr"Advance". Why the capitalization should make a difference I don't know.

The post then seemed to operate correctly.

          Attaching the results.

            Stan,

I stiil can't get a the desired effect with your result zip.

Can you try the parent record 'Abinger'and enter two child records for this parent, 11.00 and 15.00. Then use the button to post 'No Child Filter'. You would expect this to total all child records linked to the parent because there is no filter on this operation, instead only one value is posted. Do you arrive at the same total as me.

              Michael,

I was using the post on date. Sorry.

Your post "no child filter" still has a condition

@Extras_Less->Add_Arr"Advance" but your extras_less table only had one record with "Arrears" for Abinger.

When I changed the "Advance" to "Arrears" for both records for Abinger (1207) and ran the post, the numbers were added.

                Stan,

Did your 'No filter post' show a condition and John mentioned that there were conflicting conditions. My computer did not show but it was behaving as if it was.

I deleted the operation and re created it with a new name and all appears to behave correctly. When I originally created the post ops I used one as a template then 'saved as'then edited each condition. The original condition must have still been active even though I had changed them visually many times in frustration.

The lesson here is 'Beware of building an operation this way', I have spent all day on this one.

Strange the condition showed on your computer but not mine.

                  Stan,

                  Forgot to say thank you.

I have deleted all post operations and recreated them from scratch without using 'save as' and then editing filters. Now all is as expected.

I checked on my laptop and the ghost filters were ative but did not show, so it is not my computer.
