Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime Question

    Hi,

We have the runtime library here at work and we are going to be creating install cd's for our in-house software. I am not using WISE to create the setup or any other installer.

I would like to know what files need to be placed on the cd from the runtime diskettes and where they need to be installed to. I want to make this a one-click installation of the runtime files and our software application files.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Noble D. Bell

    RE: Runtime Question

I'll be interested to see what others think but I don't believe you can do what you want to do without an install program. Remember that, as with the full A5 program, installing the runtime involves writing to the registry.

In addition, once you have installed it you will need to patch the runtime up to the latest version?

Finally, you have to copy your application's files, perhaps creating the appropriate folder in which to put it.

So you probably need an install program..
    UNLESS
you use a Novell network in which case you can use a tool called Novell Application Launcher which just drops the whole thing down on to a client machine. This is an incredible utility which greatly eases the task of maintaining large numbers of machines.

      RE: Runtime Question

Actually, I've been successful in copying the Runtime files to a second computer, and having it run just fine. I could see the possibility that you could write a batch file that would copy the Runtime files to one folder, and then the support files (*.DD*, *.SE*, data, etc.) to a sub-folder of the Runtime folder (I think it's better to keep the Runtime files separate from the others).

What I would do is install Runtime on my computer, so I could apply all the patches. Then, I'd copy the Runtime files and support files to a directory structure on the CD that would match what I have on my hard drive. For the installation, I'd copy from CD to workstation, preserving the structure.

Please note: while I'm pretty sure this would work, I usually use an install program, just because it's more professional in appearance (since I sell my apps).

        RE: Runtime Question

        Noble,

I would agree with Bill, using one of the software install programs is your
best bet. Either way, you will want to look a the file "install.log" that
is created in the folder where you have your runtime installed on you computer.

It is a list of the files installed & the target folder they were copied to.
You will notice that some files were not overwritten in the ../windows/system/ folder. So you will need to make a note of those & only copy those files if
they don't exist on the target PC. There are also registery entries in the
install.log. If you plan on installing the runtime files in the same folder
as on your PC you can "run" regedit & "find" all the runtime registry keys &
export them to a file & merge them to the registry on the target PC.

If you have kept up with DOS batch files I imagine that you could work it out,
but if it is in house, I would just distribute the runtime installation disk &
a seperate *.bat file for the applications.....

        good luck Noble
