Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Backslash restriction on this board?

I have posted a number of scripts and batch file commands on the A5 board. When proof reading them all is well. After the post in some instances the backslash is removed from the post. Do I need mental help or can someone explain, or have any idea what ozone monster is eating them up? There are times I will post the correct script twice and the "" are gone again.

RE: Backslash restriction on this board?

Case in point. In the above post my oringinal test had a backslash between the quotes. After posting it reads "". Just for "kicks" and giggles I'm going to try a whole line of backslashes between a numeric count of one to ten.

Not sure how this will post but might have to see the shrink in the morning.

        Jeff,

Do a search for backslash, etc. This was discussed when this new style message board came out. I believe somneone may have posted a work around so that a backslach will appear.

Jeff, Ken is right. The backslash character is being interpreted as HTML code rather than text. There's a way to force it to be recognized, using more HTML code of course! Some of us haven't mastered HTML yet, so we often substitute forward slashes or vertical bars...

            Someone?

The "Cal" himself posted an excellent discussion (Msg ID 22693), which I printed out and keep by the keyboard.

            If you are only concerned with the backslash, type the five characters at the end of this sentence wherever you want a backslash to appear. &amp#92;

If you want to get frisky and have a less than sign show on the board, you should use. <

Ok Stan, tell us how you make the color of your text 'blue' for emphasis... I've been secretly admiring this in your messages for some time and have only now screwed up my courage enough to ask!

RE: Backslash restriction on this board?

I can't stress enough the value of the previously mentioned post by Cal Locklin.

                Short version:

to change the color of a section of text, be it a character, a word, a phrase, etc... enclose that section with
                "font color="#0000ff""your text here"/font"
The font color = obviously changes the color. The /font "resets" or cancels the change. The " and " indicate to html that the enclosed characters are to be iterpreted as commands.

                Other useful color numbers are:
                #000088 - a nice dark purple
                #00cc00 - lime green
                #006600 - forest green
                #cc0000 - firetruck red
                #660000 - brick red
                #dddd00 - ugly yellow green

Any valid hexadecimal can be used in any position in the six character "number" to produce one of 16x16x16x16x16x16 colors.

                Ain't this fun?

RE: Backslash restriction on this board?

One thing that may not be obvious is that you can cut and paste these codes. The following is from the previous post of mine, pasted here. It contains the line following the line "with"

                  your text here

the above should be blue text.

So all you need do is to copy the

                  &amp#92; ---- backslash code

                  < ---- less than code

&ampgt: ---- greater than code, included for consistency

                  <font color ="#0000ff">your text here</font> ---- font color switch

to a wordpad document, save it as "html codes" or the like, and when you need to use one of them, cut and paste.

So you don't have to remember how, just remember where you stored the codes.

Boy, I hope I typed all this in right.

Nope, got carried away with substituting codes to make the html codes appear, not their results.

                    <font color ="#0000ff">your text here</font> ---- font color switch

                    should be

"font color ="#0000ff""your text here"/font" ---- font color switch

                      Thanks for the plug, Stan.
Looks like you got carried away on another one as well. I've done it more than once myself! I try to test large messages in an HTML editor before posting them but sometimes it's just too much effort - and then, of course, I mess it up!
The characters to get the " sign are <
As a matter of interest, the " sign is > but you can just type the > sign normally - it's much easier!
                      Notice that each HTML 'tag' for characters like this starts with & and ends with a semi-colon ;

                          The thread is dated 06-20-2000.

Try searching for "Replace the single backslash"

(I had a bit of trouble finding it myself.)
