Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    startup application

In earlier versions of A4 and A5 it was possible to attach a script to the a5.exe file to start your application without having to go to the opening A5 screen and select a database, ie. A5.exe -A=d:a5datawell program . I have tried to do this in A5v4, but it doesn't work. The best I have been able to do is to start A5 and choose the database at the opening screen and then my startup application menu begins. I would again like to have a shortcut on my desktop that starts A5 in the background and opens my startup application without having to start A5 and select the application. Is this possible in A5v4?
    Thanks
    Allan

I believe you'll find the details on how to do this in the README403.PDF

The short answer to your question is Yes it can be done!

You can also search this forum. It has been discussed more than once.

Thanks for the reply. I did search the forum before I asked the question. The info I found before didn't help this situation.

        Thanks again.

Okay the simple and easy way is to go to the folder that contains your app. Right click on the "Your app name.ADB" button, select Create Shortcut. The Shortcut gets created. Now drag the shortcut onto the desktop.

That should do it and you can change the icon if you want.

            RE: startup application

Alternatively, you can create a shortcut to the Alpha5 EXE, and in the properties of the shortcut object you can embed your command line arguments.

              RE: startup application

Allan, Taking it a step further here is the text from the properies on our startup icon:

              "C:Program FilesA5V4Alpha5.exe" "c:posiis.adb" -include=c:posstart.txt

This starts the program and then looks to the custom start.txt file in the pos directory that we have created. That text files reads as follows:

-title="IRIS - Invoice, Receipt and Inventory System"
              -splash="splash.bmp"
              -icon="ii.ico"

The first line loads the title bar text that displays in our app. The second line loads whatever *.bmp is in the pos directory and displays in place of the Alpha V splash screen. The third line displays whatever *.ico is in the pos directory in the upper left hand corner of the app's title bar and in front of the title bar text.

                RE: startup application

Typo in the last one, should read:

                "C:Program FilesA5V4Alpha5.exe" "c:posiis.adb" -include=c:posstart.txt

For some reason this line is corrupting during the post. There are supposed to be seven back slashes in it that are being removed in the post. If you are interested let me know and I'l email it to you. This is not the first time I have had trouble posting command lines on the board. Anyone else ever have this problem?

                    RE: startup application

Do a search on "command line start alpha5" and you will find a message which is a copy of the help file info with updates based on the readme files.

In this case, be sure to include the quotes in your search text or you will find hundreds of unrelated topics!

Thanks for the help. The one place I hadn't checked was the README403.pdf It had the answer and my startup application works the way I want now!

                      Thanks

Thanks for the help. Your reply put it a little more in perspective. After reading readme403.pdf I figured out part of it, but I see from you reply how to add more to my startup.

                        Thanks again.

Thanks for the hint. When I did my initial search of the forum I just used Startup Application and only had 5 hits. I didn't think to do a search on "command line start alpha5".

                          Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. This works well with the new startup screen that I created along with the advice from Tom Cone and Jeff Moses.

                            Thanks for your help!
