Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: a5 v 4.5 beta (which has just gone gold!!)

we expect to release v4.5 next week.

all registered users will recieve email notification from alpha giving the url where they can place their orders.

we will also place an announcement on the message board with the url where you can place your order for v4.5.

the cost of the V4.5 upgrade is $79 for a single user license, $199 for 3 -user license, $299 for 5-user license, and $199 for Runtime.

the cost of the V4.5 ugprade can be offset in FULL against the V5 upgrade later this year.

      Selwyn,

My notes from the conference aren't clear. Could you post a short list of the improvements and changes in 4.5?

I have lots of info on V5 and V6, but I didn't make any notes on 4.5.

      Thanks,

      Stan

RE: a5 v 4.5 beta (which has just gone gold!!)

The main feature of V4.5 is that we have take the improvements made to the Alpha Five engine for V5 and brought them back to the V4 platform. These improvements result in vastly improved index stability. This should result in elimiation (or pretty close to that) of "Unable to add key to tag" and "Heap lock" error messages. Indexes are now also "self correcting" - a5 checks index ingtegrity and fixes if necessary. Checking an intact index is done with no noticable impact on performance. The net result is much more robust applications.

Improved management of Windows resources - no more running out of windows resources, for example, as you cycle between desing and run modes.

Improved performance for global updates, posting etc. when the target table has a lot of calculated fields.

Improved performance in loading forms with lots of calc fields (especially calcs involving lookup() functions)

Improved multi-user performance. The algorithms for file locking have been improved. Net result should be fewer "Unable to lock" error messages.

Improved memory management will mean that some scripts that slowed down as they ran will now perform better.

and some others miscellaneous improvements and bug fixes.

Has the release date for V5 been revised?

The answer is "yes" but no date is projected. My email from Selwyn indicated it will be in o1 but he didn't want to set a projected date and have to change it. I suspect there is so much he wants to include and he definately doesn't want any more bugs than necessary. I'm willing to wait and no doubt 4.5 will be a boost.

I hope v4.5 is more stable than v4, index's have be a real problem.

                    They should be.

We have run some incredible "torture" tests here at Alpha using this engine. We have had multiple workstations running simultaneously against the same table. Each workstation runs a script that adds random data to the shared table. The scripts add records hundreds of times faster than a human operator could. In these tests, the indexes have remained intact, regardless of how long we run the test for. We have added millions of record to the sample tables without index corruptions.

No doubt you will tell us if you agree that V4.5 is more stable.

                      Selwyn,

That is great news for all of us. Did you run the same test on the old engine and get lots of corruption? Were there lots of filters in the indexes of the testing table? Was there any deleting and marking taking place during the multi-user testing? If there was, did any of the filters include marked or unmarked records only? Alpha makes such incredible use of indexes in so many places (sets -field rules - query optimazation -lookup functions). I believe that these indexes ( with filters ) separate Alpha from Access and other relational database development tools.
Looking forward to purchasing a54_5 for myself and my clients.

Yes, our "torture" tests did involve filtered indexes, and also tested deletes, and yes V4.0 failed our torture test, while V4.5 passes.

                          Selwyn,

what about support of European numbering system - numeric fields in ver 4.5 - or shd I wait for ver 5.0 - will it be solved in ver 5.0 at all ?
In Ver 4.03 it doesn't work in European way and the solution is not just to say to the users 'use the American format and that's it.
Again I found out if I hv a numeric field in a lookup table and want to use the lookup numeric field in the current table, it is again multiplied by 100 - why ?

                          Ales

Stablilty is a major issue. I'm excited about the future possibilities.
