Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rule Challenge

Hopefully this will bring som clarity to my previous threads.

Situation: 90% of all sales will be a cash purchase. No customer name is needed unless a
purchase is to be shipped. We all know it's a pain to enter "Customer Purchase" so it's seems
logical that "Customer Purchase" should be a default value.

    Table Name: Customer
    Field Name: Lastname
Field Rule in the Data Entry Tab, the Default Mode set to simple default expression and the expression is "Cash Purchase" .

This table is a child table in a set. The field Lastname is on the form along with fields from the parent table. Will this default setting work? Will it automatically display the text "Cash Purchase" and allow an overwrite?

I've already tried this and it does NOT work. However, I would like to know if a default value in a field of a child table will work. If the child table becomes the parent table, it WILL work.

I have tried several Xbasic expressions in the field's OnDepart event. Xbasic Syntax button says the scripts work but they're run, error messages result.

    What next?

    Thanks much,

    Kenn

Ken, how about a different approach?

Since this is a one-one link (correct?), why not change the structure so the "Cash Purchase" is filled in a field in the parent rather than the child? You might have good reasons not to, but it might be worth considering given the problems you've encountered.

By the way, I tried the same default expression in the child and you're right...it doesn't work.

      RE: Field Rule Challenge

What are you entering and what is the set relationship? Your explanation is still a little lacking. What are the tables in the set and how are they linked (one to many etc)?
You mention a customer record and nothing else. What and how is the customer table linked to?? Is it a one to one to a parent invoice record??

        RE: Field Rule Challenge

        John et al,

The parent table is Invoice_header and the child table is Customer, 1:1 linked on Customer_ID. I'm following the set in the invoicing database that comes with A5. When it's not necessary to record the customers name, I want the Lastname field of the Customer table to default to "Cash Purchase" simply by pressing the Tab key and moving to the next field.

          Hi Bill,

You've got a point. I could create a separate set just for that with customer as the parent and Items as the child use a separate form to record customer name and address for shipments since that is the "occassional" record.

Thanks for the idea, I'll try it out. However, the ideal way (I think) is to get the other to work but your plan "B" is worth a try.

            RE: Field Rule Challenge

Thanks to all for your attempts to help me with this. A special thanks to Martin Cole for his suggestion:

            if this.value=""
            this.value="Cash Sale"
            end if

It works like a charm. Why the other scripts didn't work, especially when the Xbasic Syntax checker said the expressions were "OK", I don't know.

Thanks again. I really appreciate the help!

Ken, where did you wind up hooking the script? i.e. is it in a field rule, or is it in an event tied to a field on your form?
