Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Jerry,

      Isn't that going to override any other name that could be in the field?

            This expression works in Xbasic, hte check syntax button says the script is OK and no errors were detected.

            if (Isblank (Customer->Lastname),Customer->Lastname.text="Cash Purchase",Customer->Lastname)
            end if

            However, when running the script, the message states

            if (Isblank (Customer->Lastname),Customer->Lastname.text="Cash Purchase",Customer->Lastname not found

            I understand this to mean that it's not finding the Lastname field, Whether it is or isn't finding the lastname field, why does the Xbasic check syntax button show no errors and when the script is run, the error shows up?

            A question out of frustrating, Why can't something that's supposed to be simple, be simple? (I don't spose I'm the first or the last to ask that question) In other words, Why doesn't the field rule's simple expression work when the field is part of the child table?

            Thanks,

              Ken, Are you using this in a button on a form? Put your field in quotes. When using isblank() yo need quotes on the field. Using to set the value of the Customer field will work in a form but I like to use the following instead.

              if isblank("Customer")
              t.table_current()
              t.change_begin()
              t.lastname = "Cash Purchase"
              t.change_end(.t.)
              end if
              'Do other stuff here
              end

                Jeff,

                No, it's not on a button. It's on the fields OnDepart event.

                  Charlie,

                  Thanks, for respondidng. I tried you expression, changing Customer to Lastname since there is no field called Customer. I get the same results, Xbasic Check Syntex button says the script is OK but when running it, I get the same result, "No Such Field". I'm comming to the conlcusion that for some reason, the field is not recognized when the table is a chilc table. Even when prefacing the field name with the table name, a different error message results.

                    Jeff,

                    Sorry for missing the name on the last post, Charlie is on the other post which deals with the same issue. The post was meant for you but got the authors mixed up. These started out as separate issues but somehow combined. Thus, I'm going to post a new thread with more clarity, I hope.

                        if this.value=""
                        this.value="Cash Sale"
                        end if
                        also, note this possibility
                        if this.value="C"
                        this.text="Cash Sale"
                        end if

                        when on a form, I prefer this method, since the mode of the file is irrelevant
                        otherwise, if you are first viewing a record, and then entering a record, and then changing a record, if you are coding for the file, you have to account for the mode

                          Ken, My typo, I guess I wasn't paying alot of attention! Should have read:

                          if isblank("Lastname")
                          t.table_current()
                          t.change_begin()
                          t.lastname = "Cash Purchase"
                          t.change_end(.t.)
                          end if
                          'Do other stuff here
                          end

                          This works, I'm using it in a number of scripts.
