Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    script in xbasic

I'm trying to write a script to create a report from a set. This report should ask you for a health care facility name, take that input and search the facility table. Then it should place that facility name and corresponding address info (from facility table)on the report as a heading. Then the chart field are filled in by tabulating data from my patient demographics table according to the facility name and region. There are 3 colums-facility data, regional data, and statewide data. If I get the facility name to be placed on the report it doesn't put the address or region. If I fiddle with the script I can get it to place the appropriate address and region on the report but not the facility name. Also if I input a misspelled facility name it should tell me "no such facility found". Sometimes this works and sometimes it just follows through all the functions and places the misspelled name on the report. I can send the scripts and any other info someone would need to help me but I'd rather do it through e-mail as it may get complicated. One of the programmers here sat with for 2 hours this morning and he can't figure out why it won't work. Thanks ahead of time for any help someone can give me.

    Parent(Facility ?)
    ----child1 (regional info ?)
    ----child2 (other info ?)

what do they contain, and what is the linking field

Mary, when I need to produce a filtered report such as you describe I approach it like this:

        1) design a report that contains the fields I need and one group break based on facility name or some other unique identifier. Set the 'order' to be based on the group break.
Set the properties of the report layout so that the 'details' of the report will always be based on the Current Selection of Records. At this point I do not embed a filter in the properties of the report or its details...

After step 1, if you run the report against the table it will show you all facilities, one right after the other.

        2) Once the report layout is working like I want I start playing with the table, experimenting with various queries or filters until I get just the ones (or the one) that I need. When the current view of the table is sufficiently focused, I run the report again. This time it should only contain facilities which are present in the current view of the table, and none other. once this is working I go to step 3

        3) I write a script which when run against the table will automatically query the table for the desired record or records. To that script I add statements which will call the report immediately after the query is run.

Basically what I do is build the layout. Then build the desired query by hand. Then automate it.

Spoken as only an expert can. Yes, Tom, I put you in that catagory along with several others on this board. I learn a lot by reading your (and others) posts even when it is a subject I'm not working on.

          Thanks for your participation.

Sound like you are trying to get the script to put data in the report. Instead, put the data on the report based on the fields in the table or set. Then use a query to select which record(s) is printed.

An alternative to building a query as Tom suggested is to put the query filter and order right in the 'report.print()' command in Xbasic.

:Layout Type.Print( Layout Name, [Filter expression], [Order expression] )
            -or-
:Layout Type.Preview( Layout Name, [Filter expression], [Order expression])
