Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    E-Mail as per Selwyn

Selwyn was nice enough to give us the following:

function email as N(address as C)
    declare shell32 ShellExecuteA LLCCLLL
    email_address = "mailto:"+address
    ShellExecuteA(0,"open",email_address,0,0,1)
    end function

Now the greedy part. Are there any more options ( eg an opportunity to put in the subject ) that can be invoked with this call? I know we'll have a lot more flexibility with a5v5, just looking for a temporary solution.

    John,

    Use a calling line like

    email("Ira J. Perlow ?subject=The subject goes here")

Note that you can also include a fuller e-mail address with a name as demonstrated above as well.

      RE: E-Mail as per Selwyn

      Ira,

Many thanks for your reply. It works very well. I messed around with other components of mail on a trial and error basis. For example:

      email("[email protected] [email protected]")

I tried unsuccessfully to get it to accept more than one parameter. Have I hit the wall here or might there be something other than a question mark that would preceed another parameter?

Thanks for any help you can give.

      John

Please share... I have been trying for two hours now and know that I'm just doing something very stupid. I can get it to work with a subject if not using fields, however, I would like to use field values for the subject as well as the e-mail address.

            John,

I don't know if this is what I was looking for or not. I am creating a knowledgebase database. The main field would be a topic name and the second field in the dbf would be a hyperlink to the knowledge article. All the articles would exist in a predefined central directory. What I would like to do is have the user select the article then have Alpha5 open it up. The files in questions would be Word or Excel type documents. How do I do this?

            Thanks.

              Charles,
Do a search on "sys_open". I believe it uses the file association of what you open to launch whatever you place as the parameter. In the code archive Cal Locklin has an explanation the the sys_print command. You must have a5v4.5 build 266 to use either. Good luck.

                RE: E-Mail as per Selwyn

I think I have an answer and I know I have a question. The following works (all on one line, of course):

sys_open("mailto:[email protected] [email protected] &subject=email switches")

As for the question, notice I have not used Selwyn's function but rather sys_open() described in the Ver.5 doc but already present in Ver 4.5. Would there be an advantage to either of the methods or are they equivalent.

                Regards to all,
                Bill

OK John. Thanks for the prompt reply. It works! But I need to know how to put a fieldname into the sys_open statement. I can't find an example of that. The .dbf has the corect fieldname and path. I then want the user to push a button and have that Excel spreadsheet open. What is the right syntax?

                  Thanks.

                    Charles,
When on a form you can use something like:
                    sys_open(full_name.value)
Full_name is the object name, but since Alpha by default gives the object the same name as the field, that will probably work.
