Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Hold the Shift key down as the application is starting. That should drop you to the Control Panel.

      Scott,
I've never tried this, but it might work. Assuming the code that does the hiding is attatched to the oninit event of your atartup form, the scripts reside in the dictionaries of either a set or a dbf. What if you renamed them temporarily, including the dictionaries, to sometning else. Upon entering the app Alpha might error out without the command hide() having been executed. Whether Alpha still opens the app and lets you in, when it doesn't find the startup form, I do not know.

Thanks Finian and John ... The shift key doesn't work on load, however, John hit the nail on the head sorta.

I renamed the startup table and assoc. files .. It allowed me to turn the run on load off in the DB properties, but I then had to change back the origional names to have access to the forms and table. 2 points for John.

Another reason to make backups frequently...

Thanks again for your help ..

Scott, don't discard Finian's suggestion. You may need it some day. When the shift key is held down while the database is opened Alpha Five bypasses the autoexec script (if you have one) in the database. This can be *really* handy if you discover errors in the autoexec script which hang the system.

Thanks Tom .. I have made a note of that .. In my case I didn't have a autoexec script just what was on the forms .. However Point taken.

            Thanks again

              To expand on Tom's comment...

I seldom use the start-up form anymore. Instead I use the autoexec script and can put "form.view(...)" in the script. I stumbled on this when I was working on the automated network optimization (see code archive) and found that I could do a lot of things in the autoexec before loading the form - like checking for files, checking passwords, etc. In addition, the use of the shift key to bypass the autoexec is a nice bonus - esp. during development when you may need to reload the app frequently and don't need to run through the form loading sequence.

Scott, One word of caution. If you ever do rely on the autoexec to start you app form remember that if you can use shift to get to the control panel so can anyone who reads this message board. I can assure that many of our app users monitor this board. I'm not saying that the autoexec is not a good way to go, its just that in some instances it could create an undesirable security leak.

                  RE: HELP !!!! Locked out

Another alternatve I have used is create a new empty database and add the menu table with the busted stuff. Open the form and check and fix code. Reopen the original database to check it out. Swap back and forth till you are happy...

The autoexec and automatic form run on load actions are stored in the original database dictionary so they don't get started in the new database...Very easy.

I trust version 5 will both have better and worse security! This conforms to the Steve Williams theory of everything, "the opposite is also true". We want better security , and then when we screw it up we will curse it!
