Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V5 suggestion; Drag and Drops

It would be cool to be able to have drag and drop objects.

    Example 1,
I have a customer table and an invoice browse (or hotspot...)
I click on a draggable field (mouse down) and release over the browse (mouse up) and a new invoice is created and filled with the customer data, ready for detail...

    Or
I have a calendar form with several browse objects showing the same table, each browse being a different date. I click on a record in one browse (mouse down) and drag it to another browse and release (mouse up) and the date gets appropriately switched.

It's all smoke and mirrors - xbasic can do all the above now. I just think it would be cool from a user interface point of view.

    I agree!
This year I have been "volunteered" to organize the 4th of July parade...about 200 entries, and I am going to convert the database to A5 from Access. The last process is to put all the entries in parade order (no tumbling or dance teams behind the horses!), and I was trying to figure out how to highlight one or more rows in a browse and drag them to where I want them to be placed (like you can do with table structure). I was thinking about sequence numbers and renumbering after the "drop" but its confusing to me. If A5V5 has the capability (and its available by July 3rd) then it would be a snap.

      Pat,

I share your need. This would be most helpful in rearranging evidence numbers. Auto numbering the way I need is a nightmare but this would allow a great deal of flexibility. If A5 came out with a method of drag & drop and then the rest auto renumbers, WOW!!!!! Now, that's a real asset for those of us who work within the legal system. Others as well, I', sure.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

I have a need for this with routing and renumbering of stops. This would be a great asset to A5.

          Hi,

I'm right with you guys! I would like to drag the contents of one field in a browse table, and be able to either have it copy or move (choosing which by simply dragging to copy or holding down the shift, or Ctrl key, and dragging to move) the original field's contents to another [target]field -- like the drag and drop that Windows provides.

It would make editing and correcting data-element / field-type misalignment a snap. (I have used this feature in other programs, and it reduces editing time significantly.) Currently the only way to do this is to cut and paste, which takes way, way, way too long on cleanups of large files.

I hope that this feature is included some day.

          Regards,

          Geoff Hollander

in v5 we will be able to go part of the way for you if you write a little xbasic.

there is a new method for browse called .selected_records(), which returns a list of record numbers that are currently selected.

so you will be able to select some rows, then right click and choose a command to operate on the selected rows. this could include, "move to another table", "copy to another table", etc.

              Selwyn-

This was what I was thinking. It can all be done by xbasic now except with the addition of a change in the cursor from from an "arrow" to a "hand" or "page" it would make a user interface tool that end users could relate to, and which is already in the Windows lexicon of graphical meaning.

I guess it would be a new method.
