Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Terminal Server

Has anyone used Alpha Five with Terminal Server? The scenario envisaged is to use Terminal Server to allow multiuser-access over ISDN lines to a central application.

Any comments, thoughts or insight greatly appreciated.

    RE: Terminal Server

    Hi Ron:

We use Citrix and it works great. It took us a whole day to get it up and running, and then about another day to get it fine tuned, but it was worth it.

If you put it on a fast server, it will perform faster than network optimization (a shadowed application). In fact you can even use a 486 computer with a browser, and the speed will amaze you.

I even have a special log on for just myself, and I can log on at home and develope and tune our application with out even going in to the office. And if I add tables and new forms every one has access to them immediately. No need to refresh the shadow, since everyone is working off of the server version.

It is well worth the investment!

    Good Luck:

      RE: Terminal Server

WE USE TERMINAL SERVER. SIX LOCATIONS IN 5 CITIES BUT WE USE FRAME RELAYS. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT ISDN OR IDSL WILL ALSO WORK. JUST MAKE SURE YOUR SERVER IS BEEFED UP SOMEWHAT AND YOU WILL BE FINE. WE RUN TWIN PROCESORS AND 1 GIG RAM. OUR UTILIZATION IS BETWEEN 15% AND 45% OF PROCESSOR CAPABILITY AND 20% TO 45% RAM. I DO RESET THE SERVER TWICE WEEKLY. I MONITOR RAM USAGE AND CAN DETECT BUILDUP OF TEMP FILES IN RAM. RESSETTING CLEARS THE RAM

          RE: Terminal Server

AFTER I RESET THE SYSTEM I CONTROL ALT DELETE AND BRING UP TASK MANAGER. I THEN BRING UP THE PERFORMANCE MONITOR MINIMIZE TO HALF SCREEN. I BRING UP TERMINAL SERVER ADMIN. AND MINIMIZE TO HALF SCREEN.

I CAN NOW SEE THE NUMBER OF USERS ON ONE SCREEN AND THE RAM USAGE ON THE PERFORMANCE MONITOR.

I TABULATE THE NUMBER OF USERS VS RAM UASAGE. AT THIS POINT THERE SHOULD BE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF TEMP FILES IN RAM SO I SHOULD SEE SOMETHING LIKE THE FOLLWING
          USERS RAM
          2 200M
          4 225M
6 256M AND SO ON. THE MEMORY SHOULD BE SPECIFIC TO YOUR SETUP

AFTER A FEW DAYS YOU WILL SEE THAT 6 USERS MAY NOW REQUIRE 312M OF RAM. A FEW MORE DAYS AND YOU MIGHT SEE 325M RAM. THESE CAN BE THE BUILDUP OF TEMP FILES IN RAM. SOME PROGRAMS LEAVE THE TEMP FILES OTHER PROGRAMS WILL REMOVE THE TEMP FILES. I HAVE A GIG OF ZEON RAM SO I MIGHT HAVE MORE CAPABILITY OF HAVING THIS BUILD UP AS A PROBLEM COMPARED TO SOME ONE WHO USES SAY 256 MEGS (I THINK THE TEMPS WOULD BE FORCED TO BE REPLACED).

I USE NT 4.01 SERVICE PACK 4 WITH 5 REMOTE SITES. I USE DOS AND WINDOW PROGRAMS TO REMOTE SITES THROUGH CITRIX. FORTUNATELY ALL REMOTE USERS ARE ON THE SAME TYPE OF COMPUTERS WITH SAME OPERATING SYSTEMS.

THIS IS THE WAY I MONITOR SYSTEM PERFROMANCE OTHERS MAY DO DIFFERENTLY. THERE I HOPE I DIDN'T LEAVE ANY DANGLING PARTICIPALS FOR OTHERS TO LOOK AT

          BOB SULLIVAN.

P.S. FORGIVE THE CAPS. JUST EASIER TO SEE WITHOUT MY GLASSES. NOW IF I COULD JUST FIND THOSE...
