Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Optimization

I optimized the network with no problem. Works great.
I modified the master app on the nerwork drive and added a new table. I then went to workstation #1 and refreshed the database. The new table was not available on the workstation. I had to go to the workstation's control panel and manually add the new table to the database. Then all worked fine.

Is this the way the refresh network is supposed to work?

    RE: Network Optimization

If you add or modify a table, you need to re-optimize the network, you cannot just refresh it. Then you should refresh the shadow (if necessary).

You should not add the table manually to a shadowed database, that is just asking for trouble.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT OPTIMIZE THE ORIGINAL DATABASE (I am not shouting, just warning you.)

      RE: Network Optimization

Jay has the answer. Try to think of it this way.

When you network optimize, Alpha looks at your app (database) and creates an optimized version (shadow) on the user's machine.

When you refresh shadow, Alpha looks at the user's shadow and "refreshes" it. This brings in updated forms reports, etc..... based on existing tables.

Thus when you change the app (add a table, index, etc) the shadow is unaware of the changes. You must repeat the network optimize process to include the changes.
      There can be only one.

        RE: Network Optimization

A slight correction to what Jay said:

REFRESH will not pick up a new table, but WILL pick up changes made to an existing table, such as adding a field or changing the field type.

And, to emphasize what he said, NEVER add a DBF to your shadow database, because any data you write to that table will NOT show up on the server, but ONLY on your local DBF.

If you look at the DBF in the shadow, you'll see that it only has one record, and it's basically a pointer to the actual table on the server. This is why it will pick up table changes.

          Gary,

Go to the code archive and look for 'Automated Network Opt.'. I started a script to automate the initial installation and subsequent Refreshes. Then Ira came up with a neat solution to automatically run either a Refresh or a Full Optimize for updates.

Thanks to all for your help. I read the posts in the Code Archive. That thread could be subtitled "Everthing you wanted to know about network optimization but were afraid to ask".

Last week I created some code that automatically refreshes a work station (not a network optimize, just a refresh) to keep the users up to date as new reports are added and forms are modified with new buttons. It works and I thought about posting it, but after reading the Code Archive thread, I'll have to reconsider.

            Thanks again.

              RE: Network Optimization

Post it. Every bit helps. I have a shadow refresh script based upon Peter Wayne's script on his website. But, it does not refresh properly for some reason. I haven't had time to debug it. It refreshes great on a stand-alone system, but not on the network. So post away, so that slow learners like me might gain an insight.

I agree with Peter - post it. (But not because he's a slow learner!)

                (A) The code currently in the archive, as you noted, is rather complex and some users may not need all that.
                (B) New ideas/methods often trigger other new ideas.

                  RE: Network Optimization

I downloaded, installed and ran Ira's optimize2.zip code. I understand it (almost). Honest question - why choose between a refresh and a full optimization? If a full optimization can be run while hiding the control panel, and if it can shut down A5 automatically, why wouldn't I always want to run a full optimization rather than a refresh? That way, each workstation would be certain to have all of the tables, indexes, global scripts, etc. that are added to the app by the developer. I'm going to attempt to combine Ira's code with mine this weekend and any comments regarding this are greatly appreciated, as is Ira's code.

                    RE: Network Optimization

Good question. No reason that I know of. I think Ira said that's what he does. Is the refresh perhaps faster when multiple people are trying to do it at the same time?

                      RE: Network Optimization

Only users with full Alpha versions can create their own exports, queries, etc. Network optimize will overwrite any user created operations. Refresh shadow does not.

                        Hi Gary,

Alpha is thinking the same way you are. It is my understanding that in version 5 the network refresh command will in reality do a full optimization. So, (again as I understand it) in version 5 refresh and optimize are the same thing.

Gary, are you coming to the A5 conference?
