Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ctl3d32.dll in write folder but "missing"

I have distribution clients who cannot run A5 ver 4 because ctl3d32.dll is missing (per error message). They are running Win95 and when they search for this file it is present in the Windows/System folder where it is supposed to be. Different hardware for each. What is wrong?

RE: ctl3d32.dll in write folder but

    Linda,

Check your clients Windows/System32 folder if there is not a copy of the
file there copy it to that folder & see if it makes a difference.
I am not sure if you would have to reboot after coping the file to
the /system32 folder, but you might go ahead & re-boot just to be safe.

Let me know If it works....OK?

RE: ctl3d32.dll in write folder but

Is it possible "ctl3d32.dll" is not showing up in your registry so the system doesn't know where to find it?

My registry shows it listed under Local Machine / Software / Microsoft / Windows / Current Version / Shared DLLs. You can run a search on your registry to find it. (Running a search shouldn't hurt anything as long as you don't change the values.

I can tell you how it's defined in my system but I don't know if that would be appropriate to yours. Maybe someone else here can tell you how to get it 'loaded' correctly if it's not there. I've got to believe there's an easy way.

        Cal,

I like your answer better.... I checked the install.log
and Alpha dosen't write any files to Windows/system32 folder.
It seems more likely that the file either lost its registery key
or wasn't registered porperly....good heads up on that call!

          Doug,

FWIW, I found the file in my Windows/System folder but not in my Windows/System32 folder. I'm wobndering if this file supposed to be in the W/S32 folder? Everything works fine for me.

My question is answered. Since this occuring on two machines for the same client, I wondering if the computers are networked? That may have something to do with it.

RE: ctl3d32.dll in write folder but

One thing to watch out for with certain popular Windows DLLs is duplicates. An error message that implies the absence of a DLL can actually mean too many. That is most often one in Windows and one in the app's folder.

In the case of ctl3d32.dll, I believe it's supposed to match the OS's date and be in Windows\System. Try renaming any others.

Put it in the A5v4 dir and it should work fine.

RE: ctl3d32.dll in write folder but

A related question, Does anyone know if all Dll's needed by A5 are put in the A5 directory (copies from C:windows) will A5 look there first. This would be a help in portability. Then could treat A5 like A4, when we get a new user I just copy a directory from the network to the users C: drive and am done. Also would prevent problems with incorrect DLL versiions.
