Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Corrupted Index

I am building an application with full text search Index on a particular 80 character field. It works fine for a period but without any reason saving changes will take up to 15 seconds and eventually lock up completely with the hour glass showing.
Re building the index does not fix the problem. I have to remove the index completely and re specify to fix the problem.
At present I only have 10 records in the offending database
    I run A5v4 build 230 with Win98se on a Pentium c500 system.
I have removed and reloaded Windows and A5 to no avail.
I have also moved to another PC with Win98 first edition, but it still occurs.
Is this a known problem or am I doing something wrong

    RE: Corrupted Index

Can you attach a copy of your database to a message? Then we can see if the problem occurs on our systems, and we can see how you've implmented the index.

      John,
I have had the same problem with a full text index causing illegal operations and so on. I never did find a fix. Just had to settle with regular index.

          RE: Corrupted Index

          John,

The full text search index is on an 80 character 'calculated' field.

The calculated field derives its value by trimming and concatenating 5 other user entered character fields. This is based on a field rule in your table.

I believe you may have stumbled into a timing problem. It would not surprise me if the routines which update your full text index begin immediately upon saving your new or changed record. However, the calculated value may not have first been fully completed. In other words the index update may not be conditioned on the calculated field having first finally updated itself. The calculated field update and the index update probably occur asynchronously. If my guess is right the index update routine would be trying to 'hit a moving target'.

If my guess is right, you might look for ways to force the values to be derived and stuffed into the field *before* the record is saved. It may be possible for example to collect the input from the user in a series of variables, derive the calculated value from them, and then assign them to their respective fields in the table., all before saving the new or changed record.

              RE: Corrupted Index

I have had this problem for weeks now. I reported it to Alpha and they are looking into the problem. You can still use the CONTAINS() Function , just that without the FTI defined it builds its own and you get the dreaded blue line.
