Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    compiling remotely and locally

in something less than 2 years, I have only run into this problem twice:

I make modifications to a program on my machine, and then upload THE ENTIRE DATABASE to the remote user, via PCAnywhere. But must open and then save a form (or, whatever,) on the remote machine from at the remote machine to get it to work correctly.

The last case was that embedded browses on a form were set to read only, with a right click menu allowing sorting only, but on the remote machine, their right click menu came up with "Delete Record" - and they naturally got into trouble with it.

But when I opened the form, via PCAnywhere, and then saved it, it performed as desired. The problem is that all but two of my installations are Run Time!!

(Remember the days when we were using CPM as the defacto operating system, and all programs - esp written in CBasic - needed to be compiled locally??)

    RE: compiling remotely and locally

    Martin:

Are you, by any chance, using the "Speed Send" option in your PCAnywhere file transfers? This got broken somewhere in the change from V7 to V8 and it's still broken in V9. In fact, I've never seen such a screw-up as perpetrated by Symantec in their so-called "upgrade" of the file transfer module. In any event, "Speed Send"ing A5 files resulted in such problems for us that we have stopped doing it at all.

This means sending the entire file set takes appreciably longer in transmission. In the later versions, just resynching the file transfer windows at the beginning and end of the transfer can add as much as an additional 8-10 minutes to the transfer process. One time in ten, the resynch of the file transfer window fails and locks up the client system. It's a nightmare. Unfortunately, we have so many clients out there with PCA that replacing it is an even bigger nightmare. If we were starting out today, we would be looking seriously at alternatives. Just had to get that off my chest.

If you are not using speed send, I'd recommend that you do a database compact locally as the last step prior to transfer, and that you run a database compact from the file menu (which you can do with the runtime) as the first thing you do on the client system.

      thank's

      will try that tonight

yes - about speed send - i quit using it ,too. had problems. But, had not thought of using an automatic file transfer to send the program back. yes - that would logically obviate the "directory refresh" issue - yuk - takes forever.

i guess i could then log back on and do the compact.

Finian, I'm using pcAnywhere v. 7.5 with no speedsend problems that I've noted. I get trouble-free transmissions, and I do it on average once a day. And several times a month, I use it to update my data to match the client's. This often involved .dbfs of 50 to 200 Mb.

          RE: compiling remotely and locally

          Hi Steve:

Yes, the problems with Speedsend appeared in the V8 upgrade. I've thought about going back from V9 but, since all of our newer clients are on V8 and 9 (we ship a new PCA with each system) it's too much of a pita to change.

A full system transfer (including appointment scheduler files) can run up to near 200 megs. Fortunately the compression on the dbf files does speed things up so, for example, a 180 meg transfer I did on Friday took about 1hour 15 minutes. That would have taken about 40 minutes with a reliable speedsend.

            RE: compiling remotely and locally

Well, as it turns out, it wasnt about compile at all. It is an oddball situation:

The form has right click menu set to none
All embedded browses are read only

If you right click over the form no right click comes up --- good.
If you left click on a field in a browse and then right click, mark/unmark comes up --- okay.
But, if you put the mouse over a browse without clicking on a field, and right click, the delete option comes up --- baddd.

If you delete you delete the parent.

I worked around it by going to field rules for the parent file in the set, and at candelete I check a global variable and cancel().

This works. It could be everything is working the way its supposed to work, but I was surprised.
