Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wacky menu

I'm having a problem at times with the menu bar at the top of the screen going wacky.

Sometimes there are two or three run on lines of menu items w/some mixed in repetes and two sets of system buttons at the end of the last line.

This is happening when I open a default browse, "design" a form, etc.

Anyone know what might be causing such a thing.

    Thanks, Jeff

You are not alone on that one, I think everyone experiences that bug. It has been addressed here before, and if memory serves that little problem is being addressed with the new version coming out in December. I don't remember if there was a solution to it, but just wanted you to have the warm and fuzzy feeling of being part of an elite group. :)

          RE: Wacky menu

          Jeff,

I was plagued with this problem for about 8 months, until we finally found out what was causing it at the Alpha User's Group meeting last month in NYC.

To find out the solution, attend our next meeting...

          Just kidding.

The problem in my case was caused by opening a form without any menu on it. I bet this is what is causing your problem. To resolve the problem, make a custom menu and put it at the top.

You can test this by opening the database and opening a default form or browse. The menu should be fine. Now open up one of your forms (without a menu) in design mode, and the menu starts corrupting itself (or as Peter Wayne so eloquently put it: Alpha puts itself in an unstable state).

          Hope this helps.

          Let us know.

            Thanks Jay,

I'll bet your right on the cause but I have a problem with the solution.

I don't run menus at the top of the screen because I can't get the system buttons disabled.

I run the forms maximized and don't want users to be able to do anything with those buttons.

It seems when a form is maximized those buttons work even if they are turned off in properties and are grayed out on the screen.

Is alpha (Runtime) going to crash if I leave it as is.
            I don't run any menus.

Is there a fix for the Maximize - system buttons problem?
I would like to have the use of the menus but not at the cost of users being able to use those buttons.

            Thanks, Jeff

              Jeff,

The menu problem only occus in development, and sometimes in the report preview, but it has never been a problem with my clients during use.

You are correct, the system buttons will not disappear. But the only thing the system buttons on a form will do is to minimize, maximize, restore or close the form.

                RE: Wacky menu

My work around is to design a custom blank menu and blank toolbar and attach these on forms where I have no need for a menu. This also helps to eliminate some of the screen judder in maximised view when switching between forms and maximised print previews.

To cancel out the Windows x you can place a cancel() on the forms canexit event. The trouble is if you are using a companion browse which I often do, this action prevents the use of the browse.
