Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    problems with runtime vanish with full

    have been having problems when users exit alpha with runtime 4.03 - sometimes exits successfully but leaves something in memory, and for example when you restart the computer get message, "application not responding, etc."

    or, when exiting get "alpha5 has performed an illegal action, etc."

    sometimes, the only rcourse is to restart

    when I realized that the only computers I was having these problems with were using runtime, I installed the full version as a test - and the problems immediately vanished.

    when closing i am running scripts and operations that look for blank records or invalid records, compact, etc.

    has anyone else had similar problems

    Martin, I don't recall any differences such as you describe. I do think it's important that the runtime version & build match the version & build that was used to construct the application.

    Is it possible the users are bypassing your Exit button, using the System Menu to close out Alpha Five with the little 'X' in top right corner of the Alpha Five window? I suppose this could cause certain processes to be incomplete...

      versiobns are same - and i have a cancel() at canexit on every form

      i think it has to do with the scripts and operations I'm running

      i think i will try moving them to a button in my utilities menu

        Martin,

        I have mentioned this before as I was having unpredictable crashes or sometimes Alpha closed leaving A5Halt running. This created errors when the client re loaded. I could never duplicate the problem on my machine with exactly the same software as their runtime version. After exhaustive processes of elimination I 99% narrowed the culprit down to color equations on embedded browses. I removed them and all has been well. I would feel happier if someone else could relate to the same problems that I encountered.

        It would be interesting to know if you do use color equations in embedded browses.

          yes i do

          in many places i let users select a row by entering or double clicking and setting it to red - bold -

          i heard through the grapevine that a new version of A5V4 - containing many of the features of A5V5 - will be for sale November 1 - but since its November 2 - maybe a while yet - was hoping the new version would fix these problems

            Michael,

            I also use color equations in my browses and do not experience the problem you are having.
            I have put an exit button on my entering form called menu, and on every form I have a button called Menu/Exit, so all users are using that button to exit A5.

            Regards

              Yes. I live on color equations - in browses and elsewhere. No problems whatsoever.

                It may have been bad syntax in my expressions, but they were straight forward. Since I removed the color equations the problems have not returned. I stress that it never occurred on my development computer only on certain client's machines using runtime versions.

                I hope this does'nt distract from Martin's original question.

                  No - no problem

                  I don't think we have really isolated the cause - though.
                  But I have moved my closing operations and scripts to a button in "utilities." - the part i am referring to is that it is looking for open files to close. while alpha does the same thing, i'm sure, i threw it in there anyway, since i was having sticky problems.

                  i also don't know if this script helps or not, but I have it in my close button:

                  on error goto noproblem
                  tbl=table.current()
                  var->office=tbl.office
                  x=sys_shell(substr(a_db_current_path,1,3) + alltrim(var->office) + "daily.bat",2)

                  files = filefind.first(A_DB_CURRENT_PATH+"*.dbf")
                  WHILE .not. files.eof()
                  table_name = files.name()
                  flag = Table.isopen(table_name)
                  if flag
                  table_name.close()
                  end if
                  files.next()
                  END WHILE
                  :a5.close()
                  end

                  noproblem:
                  Resume next
