Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Enter values from fields in previous record

    Hi,

    I would like to set-up a button that when pressed would update specified fields in the the current record to the data from the previously entered record; such as when pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F.

    I'm an xbasic know-nothing-at-all...would appreciate if someone could steer me in the right direction.

    Thank you,
    Mike

    I don't claim to know much about A5 but it seems the easiest way would be to use the "previous" field rule. If you need it on a button I guess you would have to set a variable on the onexit event for the fields in question and then the button can put the variables in the fields. Someone smarter than me can give you better details. (I can tell you how to do it in A4- but that isn't much help)

      RE: Enter values from fields in previous record

      Hi Mike,

      I think the easiest way would be to use a bit of xbasic. Go into design mode on your form and put the button on the form and then enter the actions for the button. Change to the xbasic editor rather than the action scripting (or enter inline xbasic on the actions scripting form) Enter the following code:

      dim vdata as c
      vdata = previous("Your_field_name")
      parentform:Your_field_name.value = vdata
      parentform:Your_field_name.refresh()

      This should do it. Remember that it uses the current index to determine the previous record. There were some issues earlier about the previous() function not working as advertised. If this doesn't work consistantly for you there a 'longer' way that will. Let us know how it works.

        Russ/Jim,

        Thanks for your help.

        I'd use the previous() function from the field rules, however, I don't need to get the previous value for each record, only about 25% of the time.

        I'll begin work on trying your suggestion immediately Jim.

        Thanks again!

          Jim,

          Works like a champ! Thanks for your help.

          I had another idea...I thought that instead pressing a button to get the data to be retrieved, maybe I can set it up to work automatically if I enter out of first "retrieve" field with it being empty then the "retrieve" is done automatically.

          Any thoughts?

          Here's the xbasic so far.

          ''XBasic
          dim vdata1 as c
          dim vdata2 as c
          dim vdata3 as c
          dim vdata4 as c
          dim vdata5 as c

          vdata1=previous("coname")
          parentform:coname.value=vdata1
          parentform:coname.refresh()

          vdata2=previous("coaddress")
          parentform:coaddress.value=vdata2
          parentform:coaddress.refresh()

          vdata3=previous("cocity")
          parentform:cocity.value=vdata3
          parentform:cocity.refresh()

          vdata4=previous("costate")
          parentform:costate.value=vdata4
          parentform:costate.refresh()

          vdata5=previous("cozipcode")
          parentform:cozipcode.value=vdata5
          parentform:cozipcode.refresh()

          Thanks,
          Mike

              Hi Jim,

              Thanks again for your help!

              I'll start putzing around with that suggestion. I'm really begining to think this xbasic thing is pretty great. I thought the flexibility with Alpha Four was great. I have a feeling that I haven't even begun to scratch the surface.

              Thanks,
              Mike
