Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wrong Total

I have a database that I import from a client, it contains amounts that I need a grand total for, the problem is that my totals dont match theirs, this databse contails over 1400 records, I've manually totaled the clients records and their totals are correct, I have placed a calc field on a form that totals the amount field in my database so we know if we proof to the clints figures and it just wont work, any help would be greatly appeciated

Carl, tell us more about the data and your calc. field expression. How many significant digits are being imported? What expression are you using in your calculated field? If your total is 'close' I wonder if this could a rounding issue? Will know more when we hear further from you.

One thing I'd check right away if I were you, is to make certain that the values actually stored in your database match the source values exactly.

      RE: Wrong Total

The file that I receive from our client is a Tab Delimited ascii file that they export from Excel, I import this file into a new table then append from that table to one that I have setup with a form so corrections can be made to control formatting of text ect... the Table that I append to has a character field with amounts in it that i need totaled and and shown on the form, I created a calc field called "Bal" in the form total(val(AMOUNT)), I've dont this for other clients many times and we always proofed, I am in the process of verifying the amounts in the table with the amounts that the client sends, I'll let you know how that turns out, thanks again for your help.

        RE: Wrong Total

Try changing the calc field expression to:

        tablesum("Yourtablename.dbf",".T.",val(Amount))

That expression evaluated to the same figure that I was getting, I have noticed what I think is the problem though, I created a numeric field in the same table and had the amount character field update the numeric field, I noticed that if the amount field contains an amount in the thousands it cuts it off and update only the first number, example one field should have been 1,296.17 and when I run the update the numeric field shows only 1.00, the amount field is left justified, could this be the problem?

            RE: Wrong Total

            Possibly, yes.

You need to have enough 'room' in the destination table's structure to import the complete number, including all decimal places. Check and expand your structure for the field to which you are importing values from the external file.

Check the format of the field on your form, too. It will not necessarily be the same width as your field occupies in the table, itself. There's even a possibilty the display width on the form will be different, too. So, check the properties of the display field on your form to verify that the appropriate number of spaces is available for your data.

              RE: Wrong Total

Carl, the comma in your source number may be messing you up.

Compare the following two sequences from the Alpha Five Interactive Editor:

              ?val("1,234.50")
              = 1.000000

              ?val("1234.50")
              = 1234.500000

                  Carl,
You can use the stritran function to strip unwanted commas.

                  amount = stritran(amount,",","")

                  1,234.50 becomes 1234.50
