Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sort by Calendar Month

    I have a calc field in a group break header which I want to sort by calendar month as follows:

    January 1994
    February 1994

    January 1995
    February 1995

    I posted this some time ago and received a number of responses but was never able to get the right results. Some of the suggestions would sorted by month but used numbers instead. Surely someome must sort reports this way.

    Thanks,

    RE: Sort by Calendar Month

    Ken,

    Just make a break expression that is the following;

    LEFT(cdate(datefield),6)

    Really, it's that easy!

      Ira,

      Close but no cigar. It displays as 199902 rather than February 1999.

        Ken,

        This is the break expression, not the value you want to display!
        The break expression means that a group break occurs everytime the value changes.

        If you want to display the date differently, use an expression that returns what you want, e.g. cmonth(datefield)+" "+cyear(datefield)

          RE: Sort by Calendar Month

          I'm really missing something here. My thoughts are the report first has to be in order by year (ascending) and then by calendar month. That's why I tried putting cyear(dofr)in the group break expression with cmonth(dofr)+" "+cyear(dofr)in a calc field, placed in the group region. It doesn't break as expected and I get dates with various months and years within the same group.

          Where am I missing the boat?

          Thanks,

            RE: Sort by Calendar Month

            Ken,

            Your groups must "effectively" be sorted the same way as the breaks. If your records are in Name order, the year and month might change every record. If they are in a date order (by the datefield used for the break expression), then you will get the correct order.

            Check the report properties for detail order, sort by group break and the order expression used by the index or query that might be used by the report.

              Ira,

              Finally got the sleepy cob webs cleared out. I went back and read your responses. One light came on and put the suggested expression in the group break expression. Still got the dates mixed up and finally discovered I had put the wrong date field in the calc field expression. Switched to the right date field and "Whatcha Know?", it works as advertrised.

              Thanks for your patience and help.

                Hi Ken

                I just have some thoughts.

                Would you not need two group breaks? First group by year then group by month?

                Group 1 -> cyear(dofr)
                Group 2 -> cmonth(dofr)

                Hope this helps

                Robert

                  RE: Sort by Calendar Month

                  Robert,

                  I tried that from the git-go and perhaps I didn't do it right. As Ira suggested, when I created the group, I used LEFT(cdate(date_close),6) as the expression for the group break and cmonth(date_close)+" "+cyear(date_close) in the calc field which I placed in the group header. It works fine.

                  Man, what a wild, wild, wild game between the Dolphins and the Jets. That was fun to watch.

                  Thanks for your thoughts.

                    Robert,

                    Use 2 groups if you want to run slower. If you are not using group values based on only the year, using an extra group is unnecessary.
