Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    close_if_exist() the only way?

    is close_if_exist() the only way to close all forms opened?

    I found only one suggestion so far in searching the forum that says this.

    RE: close_if_exist() the only way?

    What is close_if_exist()? I can't find it in the manual and I'm not familiar with it.

      Tom,

      I use this user-defined function and I copied it from the documentation (I think) but I just searched and did not find it. It drives me nuts.

      Anyway, here's the function:
      ==================================

      function close_if_exists as N(op as p)
      DIM op as P
      ''
      '' If the object pointer is valid then an object was found and we can close it.
      ''
      if is_object(op)
      op.close()
      end if

      ====================================

      end function

        Seems like I'm cut-and-paste challenged as well.

          I don't think the close_if_exists() is documented. I copied it from the clever guy who developed the sample invoice application.

          I can use it to close all forms individually, but I would dearly like to know of a script that enabled the function to close any open layout without naming each one specifically.

            Hi Michael,

            I also copied and use close_if_exists(). Just before logging on I remembered where it came from.

            As to your question, it could possibly be done using the methods described in chap 36 of the xbasic documentation, "Application Level Methods." You will observe that methods exist to enumerate all an application's forms, browses, etc. If you put the object names into an array you could work your way down the list closing any which were open.

            Not that I've done this, you understand, but it doesn't look that difficult.

              I think you might do this

              ''XBasic
              dim form_name[100] as c
              dim form_nme as c

              form_nme= A5.form_enum("")
              if form_nme"" then
              i=1
              while form_nme""
              form_name[i]=form_nme
              form_nme=:A5.form_enum(form_nme)
              i=1+i
              close_if_exists(form_nme)
              end while
              'sort_array("form_name")
              'result= ui_get_list_array("Select a form",1,"form_name")
              end if

                Thanks Bill and Jack,

                Ideally I need to close all forms that are open before rebuilding indexes and packing deleted records from my maintenance form. Presently I close_if_exists() individually all forms that can possibly be open except the calling maintenance form which is based on an empty table. Then I use the array to perform the pack and rebuild index operation. This works fine but is tedious so will give your suggestion a try.

                  Hi,

                  I've been trying to get this to work, but I have not been successful.

                  I create the Function. That goes okay.

                  I place a button on a form, and add the script defined above.

                  I then close the form, save it, and click on the button.

                  I get an error message stating, "(form_nme) Variable is of different type".

                  Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

                  TIA

                  Tom

                    Tom,

                    Your 'See Above' was not there. But anyway try this.

                    If as you say you have created the new function 'close_if_exists()', then open a couple of forms and place this script on your button.

                    close_if_exists("Formname1")
                    close_if_exists("Formname2")

                    This is great if you need to be sure that a form is closed before running pack or delete operations etc. It will also close any dialog forms that you may have forgotten to add a close script.
