The error message "invalid operation specified" was the result of an Append operation attempt.
I had taken a memo field out of a table in the db at home and decided to append a copy of the same constructed table except it still held the memo field from the office which had a few new entries.I did not want that memo field back in the home machine so just copying the file in was not a choice.
When appending I interpreted that both tables did not have to have exactly the same fields.
Should the master and transaction table in the append operation be in the same folder as opposed to the file being on a zip or floppy and accessed as the transaction file? Since the name of the file was exactly the same when I inserted it into the same folder to do the append and it took on the characteristics of the existing file even though two 'ORDERS'tables displayed in the Control Panel. In default browse the actual fields were there but when I went into the structure it was my 'no memo field file'version. I didn't try renaming and that might have been the solution.
After no success I made use of an empty database structure, inserted the data, editted the structure and then copied the file into the active db.
I must be missing some trick for I have never been successful with Append.
