Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    TCP/IP data streams

It's not clear yet, but I may need to be able to send data from A5 tables through a TCP/IP network (probably an Intranet). By this I mean sending a stream of string data in a set format, NOT sending it in a file. I may also need to receive a stream of string data in the same way, either putting into an ASCII file and then importing into a table or putting it directly into a table, if that is possible.

Does anyone have any experience doing this with A5? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. There is a product called TCPWedge (www.taltech.com), but it is expensive ($495). Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative? If the data streams are simple, is there a zero cost way of doing it, as I believe there for doing something similar through a com port. (But I am not sure about any of this!).

    Thanks

    RE: TCP/IP data streams

    I don't think A5 can do sockets.

But, you can integrate a custom DLL that does do sockets or you may have to purchase the product you mention.

Either way, you are probabaly going to have to do some work.

But, here are some potential low cost solutions provided you have the skill:

    1) Install Perl on each Win95/98/NT workstation you need to exchange data on. Download and install the Perl socket module library from any CPAN web site. Get the "Programming Perl" book or work your way through online documentation. You can now use Perl to read data on your sytem and transfer via TCP/IP sockets to any other system on your network. You'd be surprised, the actual code for a client/server sockets is about 30 lines or so.

Cost: Price of a book and your labor, or free if you bypass the book and your labor.

    2) Install a Linux machine on your network with Samba. You can now set up Windows shares on the LInux system which is socket friendly to share files back and forth. You can then use Linux builtin development tools, Perl, C/C++ etc. and do your TCP/IP communications.

Cost: Price of a computer system and your labor. (could be pretty inexpensive since you can probably use an old 386 that nobody can use with Windows anymore but Linux runs fine with a 386 and 8MB of ram.

All in all, I'd recommend option number 1 for low cost solution.

      RE: TCP/IP data streams

      Jose,

Thanks. I was beginning to think there would be no help on this topic.

What I'm going to do now is get more info from the organization that I will be sending data to and getting data back from (credit reports, by the way) to see if they have any other requirements I am not aware of.

        RE: TCP/IP data streams

In case you are interested, attached is a perl script that acts a tcp/ip server. It sets itself up on port 51717 and reads standard text from the client.

type 'help' at the login for a command list.
