Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Record on Subform Only

    I have 4 fields (child fields) placed directly on a tabbed subform as well as a button to enter new records. When clicking the button, the parent form takes focus and the new record wants to be entered in the parent table.

    I changed the scripting to the child table but when clicking the button, the message, Trapped error in action command [1], Command: Error: arguement is incorrect data type".

    I also have an embedded browse on the same tabbed subform, same child table and fields for viewing purposes only, set to read only. I want the new record to be entered into the fields rather than the browse. What must I do to accomplish this?

    Thanks much,

    kenn

    Ken, I think it is something like this
    dim f as p
    f=parentform.this
    f:subform_name.new_record()

    Just tried it and it worked. Jack

      Jack,

      I get an error message, Arguement is incorrect data type when I use this line;
      f:subform_name.new_record()

      The full script on the On Push event is:

      dim f as p
      f=parentform.this
      f:enteractivity.new_record()

        Ken You are getting the error message based on someother reason.
        Alpha calls subforms Form1, form2, form3 etc. Look under the properties of the subform which is located on the parentform (right click on the White rectangle) and then click on properties and see what Alpha is naming the subform, it is not "enteractivity". See if this is the problem. I am pretty sure that you know how to use the Code explorer (I think this is what it is called) Jack

          RE: New Record on Subform Only

          Hi Jack,

          I'm not sure we're on the same page. The main form (frm1)contains a tabbed subform. Tab 1 contains a browse and fields from the child table. I placed 4 fields on the top part of the tabbed page and an embedded browse on the lower part of the page. My idea is to use the read only browse as a "viewer" which shows the case activity by date and a part of the activity for each date. I can then scroll down the browse, take a quick peak of the activity and click on a date to view the whole activity for that date in the fields above. It works fine but I had no way to enter a new record since I made the browse read only.

          I than created a button to open a form (frm2)containing the 4 fields. That works Ok but then I needed another button to enter the new record. So, I thought I could open the form as ready for entering the new record. Unfortunately, instead of showing frm2, it merely stays on frm1 and sets it up for a new record. In essence, I'm entering a new frm1 record as well.

          I tried placing frm2 on the tabbed page along with the browse but after entering a new record, the data disappeared. I posted this earlier and Tom Cone pointed out it was because the browse and form were each opening up the same instance, thus they were competing with each other.

          I could use the browse by expanding the height of the rows but then I wouldn't be able to view as many records at a time. (My, how particular can get)

          Hope this makes sense.

          Thanks,

            RE: New Record on Subform Only

            Ken, I do this all the time. Usually, I use child-table subforms on my tabbed object (I think the terminology of "tabbed Subform" is confusing). In any case, the child field or the child subform has to have focus when you press the enter button. I have an OnTabChange event that puts focus in the appropriate form of field, so the user doesn't enter a new parent record. But, you may have to use a subform, I don't know if you can enter a child record in a child field on a parent tab without erratic behavior.

              Peter,

              Thanks for the reply. I have browses with calc fields on the tab but teh calc fields are only for display. Love it! Works great! I'll play around with the OnTabChange a bit and see what happens.

              Thanks,
