Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help to finish Application

    Hi,

    I am just finishing an application (do they ever get really done!)and need some advise.

    I tried moving the data directory and everything seemed to work just fine. Even the field rules that lookup on a database. Is this normal to be able to move directories and have everything operate correctly, or do I have some suprises in store?

    I have a form set as a startup form. But it does not startup positioned correctly. It is maximized, but not centered in the window. Other forms open un-centered also when I access the application automatically. But when I open the forms from the controlpanel, they open correctly. What gives? Suggestions.

    Thanks

    Tom

      I bet you installed or reinstalled A5 or the runtime. If so, the install confused your font mapping. Go to the windows control panel/fonts and you will find that ariel is incorrectly mapped. Delete it. Then in the recycle bin select an restore it. It will remap correctly.

      I can't comment on your data dictionary issue.

        Any saved operations, not xbasic code, will automatically adjust to the current path to the tables, assuming the tables are in the same directory as the database files.

        I'll bet your uncentered forms are higher and more left than center, due to increased screen resolution on the target machine. Either reset the target's resolution to match the development machine or make a change to your forms on the target machine, center the forms, and save them. Both methods should result in centered forms for keeps.
        There can be only one.

          yES, I reinstalled A5 so the font needed changing. Thanks.

          Now - please tell me - how does one center a form? I don't see this option under form properties.

          TIA

            Look in the xbasic documentation under UI_info() which is on pg 344 of my print version. It gives an example of how to do this.

                Steve,

                Thank you very much - your generousity is very much appreciated.

                One questions, you mention the script must load from
                f = :form.load("myformname")
                I have my form loading as the startup form by checking the box under database settings. How should I attach this script?

                Thanks again,

                Tom

                  Tom,

                  There are several ways to run Steve's code but here is one of them:

                  -Get rid of your run on load form selection in database properties.

                  -Rename the following script to "autoexec". It will run whenever you open the database.

                  -Be sure to change "myformname" to your actual form.

                  ' Steve Workings

                  ' ------------------------------------------------------------
                  dim f as p 'used this way the variable can be local
                  'dim global f as p
                  f = :form.load("myformname")
                  a5_height = ui_info(3)
                  a5_width = ui_info(0)
                  width = f.width
                  height = f.height
                  if height>=a5_height-80 then
                  newtop=80
                  else
                  newtop = 80+(a5_height - height)/2
                  end if
                  if width>=a5_width then
                  newleft=0

                  newleft = (a5_width - width)/2
