Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Very slow database

I am having problems with a very simple database that I created to track office supplies. It had been working fine for the last couple months, but yesterday it started having a problem that I can't figure out how to fix.

When the user opens up the form to edit or add orders it takes a very long time for the form to load. I tried resaving the forms, compacted the database, checked the table for corrupted data, checking my code in the forms, but I can't find what is wrong. When I go to edit the form and then look at it is View mode sometimes it will load properly and sometimes it will take several minutes. The database is only used by one person so nothing is being shared. The table has less than 300 records.

I haven't been using Alpha 5 for very long so there might be something I am missing that I don't realize. If needed I can zip the files up and post them. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Kristal

I have found corrupted indexes can slow things down. I would check the index definitions and unless you specifically named indexes so you can call them in scripts or functions I would delete all indexes from your tables one at a time and see if that helps.

Thanks for both of your quick replies. I have tried both of your suggestions and neither of them solve the problem.

Would it help to be able to look at the database itself?

          RE: Very slow database

Someone once mentioned that this could be a symptom of a network interface card going bad, requiring many retries to correctly load the data. Seems more likely in your "sometimes" situation.

How many users/stations in your setup? Does this occur on one machine or all.
          There can be only one.

There are over 20 users/stations in this office but only 3 computers have alpha 5 on them and one other has a runtime version. The problem occurs on all machines.

Have you designed your form to open the records in a specific order? If so, Alpha must create and execute a query before opening the form. If you create and index using the same order, Alpha can use LQO and will open forms faster.

                Kristal,

If your database is very slow at only 1 common point, see if you have the code debug(1) in your XBASIC or the equivalent in Action Scripting. If the debugger is not set up properly and you have this code in there, Alpha 5 will slow down at that point trying to invoke a debugger that is not there. Try a reinstall of A5 and renove the code as solutions.

                  Kristal,

Here's another idea. I once had the same experience and traced it to a bad index name in a lookup function. Alpha will not give you an error message, but seems to want to keep trying to find that index.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I am still trying to figure out what is wrong with this database. Is it possible that the file itself is somehow corrupted so that it is causing problems with the database? I have looked at all of the code, rebuilt the index and nothing helps. I greatly appreciate any help.

                    Thanks again,

Here is my database. If it works just fine for the rest of you then I will stop banging my head against the wall and cursing Alpha 5 and look at the network instead for the problem. Thanks again for all of your help.

                          Kristal,

Just opened your database on a standalone system and it worked fine. Only problem was that it didn't find the logo bitmap. Maybe this is your problem. I have found that it is better to either embed the bitmap on the form or include it in the same directory for the database. When a shadow is created for each network user, you then have to manually add the bitmap to each users shadow directory. Do not specify a path for the bitmap when you reference it on a form. Since Alpha uses the database path by default if none is specified, this works well.

                              Not so fast...
When I looked at it, it worked fine till I clicked a few report buttons, and then it slowed to a crawl. It created a couple of queries (marked, unmarked and temporary report query)

Any way if I deleted your "Choice" object from the form it sped right up again.

Maybe you can work out a better way to pick, choose and find stuff...
