Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Invalid Page Fault

    Win 98 -1st edition
    Alpha5 [3 user pack] build 230

This expression, in the Field Rules 'Simple Default-Expression' evaluates perfectly, however, causes the fault upon exiting the expression editor or the displayed expression line in the Field Rule utility.

    EXPRESSION:

    str((val(Var->cknumb)+1),4,0)

The variable is Global set at character

    Any Ideas anyone?

    RE: Invalid Page Fault

You expression evaluates in the code editor interactive tab up to the point that var->cknumb >=9999. I'm not sure what the internal workings are, but Alpha displays four black boxes when it tries show the results of a string computation, of 4 character length, and the number being "strung" is 5 digits.

You say that this is a field rule. How many characters wide is the field for which this rule evaluates? Is there any chance that chknumb will be equal to or greater than 9999?

    Lots of potential problems here.

      RE: Invalid Page Fault

Thanx for your interest Stan. I am A4 app writer for over 10 years and REALLY dumb and new at this learning curve.

I'm sure I was 'at the wrong place' to be doing this. I've since gone around the bend and hit it from another direction and it works! What a miracle!

I wish there was a book that compared the two - i.e. "In Alpha4 it looks like this, but in A5 you have to do it this way" My dog-eared A4 manual was so perfectly written for dummies and this new thing is hard on an old guy [63].

Again, thanks for your help and interest in a situation that the guy himself could not readily explain properly.

        Ken,

Lots of old dogs hanging around this board. Selig says he's in his eighties.

Please enlighten us about what you found. It might help us help someone else down the road.

I'll email this to you as well in case you don't revisit this post.

          RE: Invalid Page Fault

Thanx again Stan. Remember this is an 'old dog'.
I wasn't clear, apparently... I was trying this not in the code editor, but rather the expression builder in the field rules utility. The Global character variable was listed as a possible field. I would evaluate it there and when I tried to save it I'd get the "Ilegal Operation' windows warning with details about the page fault. I gave up on that venture.

Here's what I did......... Went to a button on the form and added the '1' to the variable in good syntax and then used the Value Set dingie off the 'Action Script' boogie. I works.... looks funny....... and is operable. I have it going with a new entry - programmed incrementing the text number. GOD! Maybe in later life, I'll understand the damned thing!

          Thanx again
