Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Incorrect data type"

    When I copy the following script from the script recorder window to a button on a form, I get the message "incorrect data type" when I run the script. Why is that?

    :Product_data.activate()
    :Product_data.maximize()
    :Product_data.index_set()
    :Product_data.index_set("New_Cod1")

    RE:

    Because

    :Product_data.index_set()

    is meaningless

    :Product_data.index_set("")

    sets the index to record number order.

    :Product_data.index_set()

    does nothing and is incorrect syntax and generates the

    "incorrect data type" error.

      RE:"Incorrect data type"

      I eliminated the

      :Product_data.index_set()

      but still get the message
      Trapped error in action command
      Command-Inline xbasic
      Error:Argument is incorect Data Type

      Any insights?

      Thanks for the help

        Are you absolutely certain that "New_Cod1" is the name of the index as shown in the index definition screen?

          RE:

          Richard all those underscores in your script worry me.

          Do your form, table and index names all have underscores, too?

          Alpha Five often substitutes underscores for blank spaces... and then when the substituted string is compared to the original names, a mismatch turns up.

          This is a bit of a wild guess, but should be easy for you to check.

            Yes, that is the correct index name.

              You are right, there is no underscore in the form name.
              However, when I remove the underscores, I still get the same error message.

                Richard,

                Just noticed:

                :Product_data.activate()
                activates a form named "product_data"

                :Product_data.maximize()
                maximizes that form

                :Product_data.index_set("New_Cod1")
                tries to set the index for a table named "Product Data"
                to a tag named "New Cod1"

                are these the correct names for all the pieces, form, table and index tag?

                  RE:"Incorrect data type"

                  You are right. The table name is "products".
                  When I put it in the script previously cited, though, it still does not work.
                  The following works fine:
                  ''XBasic
                  tbl=table.get("PRODUCTS")
                  tbl.index_primary_put("New_Cod1")
                  product data.find()

                  I guess that what is in the script recorder is not always accurate as far as using it to write a script.

                    RE:

                    I don't use the script recorder that much. I tried something similar in the code editor with xbasic explorer which suggests that the index line should be:

                    :product_data:Tables:Products.index_set("New_Cod1")

                    Also you might try the debugger to see which line is causing the problem, I got the same error you did if I don't have a statement in the code:

                    :Form.view("product_data") - this should occur before the .activate() line

                    Hope this helps.

                        You are not, by any chance, putting the script on a button that is located on the Product_data form itself?

                            Dr Wayne will probably post a more lucid reply, but until then.

                            I believe all you should need is

                            topparent.index_set("New_cod1")

                            Topparent is the parent of the form that the button is on, which is the table "Products".

                            The form is already activated when you are able to see the button. You could leave the maximize command as is or just put it in the oninit event for the form itself.

                            The code you were using would be appropriate for opening a form based on a table other than the table "behind" the current form.
